The Arrowverse is responsible for bringing multiple heroes and villains from the DC Comics to life, but one of these heroes, Diggle's Green Lantern, never found his place in the universe.

David Ramsey's John Diggle was slated to enter his Green Lantern arc for the longest time, and even after the setup and a lot of teasing, the storyline never found fruition. In a recent panel with ScreenRant, David Ramsey revealed that he is actually glad that the idea never came to fruition.

The Arrowverse is known for its slow-burn stories, but one of these slow-burn transitions never ended up finding ground. Built towards and hinted at for several seasons, CW's DC TV shows were all but poised to bring Green Lantern to life. John Diggle, who appeared in every season of Arrow, was poised to become a Green Lantern. Actor David Ramsey, who played Diggle, revealed in a recent panel:

"Yeah, it was, right Marc [Guggenheim]? Marc and I tried for six seasons. Obviously, there is a lot of politics around property as big as Lantern."

In a conversation with The Showrunner Whisperer, Marc Guggenheim has also referred to this arc that didn't make it to the screen:

"Oh, and you should see those costumes, by the way, not a single bit of CG in any of them! [They] looked amazing. The production art, it would blow you away, honestly, stuff that looked incredible, but looked like a movie. We had an amazing writing staff; we’d written all eight scripts of the first season."

He even went on to add that the show's structure and premise were also decided at that point:

"I know what the show would have been and it was going to be emotional and exciting with two different time periods. I think incredibly strong character work that was very, very, very true to the franchise of Green Lantern."

In the 2020 Arrow finale, Diggle discovers a mysterious box after a meteor crash, one that glows green, effectively setting up the storyline. Ramsey went on to reveal some of the setups and teases that the CW shows offered in their Green Lantern plans for the Arrowverse:

"Of course, it would have been great.[Flash] came from another universe to say, "John, where's your ring?" Obviously, we had Colonel Stewart playing my father in Ernie Hudson."

However, despite all the teasing and the setups in the Arrowverse, the story arc never came to fruition. Ramsey elaborates that Green Lanterns was a massive IP and there was a lot of politics surrounding it that he is, in a way, grateful that the storyline never came to fruition:

"It wasn't for a lack of trying, but the right decision was made...I think, honestly, personally, there was so much going on at the time that it's in the hands it should be in now."

Ramsey even went on to point out that, considering the giant IP that is Green Lantern, he is glad that it is now being handled by the people that it is being handled by, most likely referring to the upcoming James Gunn series Lanterns.

"Because I'm not quite sure what would have happened with as much as was going on politically, with the property."

All's well that ends well in the Arrowverse, it appears. Ramsey is grateful that his character Diggle turned down the ring, as becoming the Green Lantern would not have aligned with his character.
