Netflix’s much-awaited Assassin’s Creed live-action has an exciting update for fans. It has taken a creative step forward by appointing Johan Renck as its director. The Swedish filmmaker is best known for his work in the HBO series Chernobyl, which bagged critical acclaim and multiple awards.

The series will launch with a star-studded ensemble cast, Toby Wallace and Lola Petticrew as lead actors. They will be joined by Zachary Hart and Laura Marcus as regular cast members. For the Netflix adaptation, Roberto Patino and David Wiener will take the chairs as co-executive producers, creators and showrunners.

The Netflix series will trace the story of these rival factions. Central characters will be placed in historical settings where the fate of humankind will be decided. While specific plot details remain unknown, it may follow the game series's known themes.

Ubisoft Film & Television is deeply involved in the development, and important industry figures like Gerard Guillemot, Margaret Boykin, Austin Dill and Genevieve Jones will also be serving as executive producers with Matt O’Toole. With Renck now on board, Netflix’s first major Assassin’s Creed series under its 2020 deal with Ubisoft is beginning to feel tangible after years of quiet development.

Renck’s involvement seems like a logical choice for a franchise that often balances spectacle with deep ideas. Chernobyl was a fine instance of his craft, where he was able to translate complex systems and abstract threats into emotionally compelling storytelling. His experience may prove important for Assassin’s Creed live action. Renck’s television résumé also includes episodes of Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, Vikings, Bates Motel, and Halt and Catch Fire.

This means that the filmmaker is poised to tell the story in a serialized format on Netflix. Netflix’s series has to overcome the criticism faced by the 2016 Assassin’s Creed film starring Michael Fassbender. Many fans felt that this rendition struggled to balance lore with accessibility.

A long-form Netflix series will give enough space to explore the franchise’s ideas, characters, and historical backdrops without going for a run-time compression. With Ubisoft closely involved and Renck overseeing the direction, the show appears positioned to take a more deliberate approach.

Renck himself had earlier opened up on stepping away from filmmaking after the success of Chernobyl, making his return much-awaited by his fans. He has previously earned acclaim with the Netflix title Bloodline and Spacemen, a sci-fi entry. This means he understands the demands of a platform like Netflix that delivers some of the most engaging, binge-worthy titles. For the Assassin's Creed live-action, expectations are high, and challenges are new.

About the Assassin's Creed game series

Assassin’s Creed is a historical action-adventure by Ubisoft. The widely acclaimed game revolves around the centuries-long conflict between the Assassins and the Templars. These orders fight for different things; the Assassins fight for individual freedom, and the Templars advocate for stability through control.

The game offers a unique blend of historical fiction and science fiction. It was inspired by Vladimir Bartol’s novel, Alamut and the legend of the medieval Hashashin sect. The game series has enjoyed massive global popularity with fourteen main installments released to date, the latest being Assassin’s Creed Shadows in 2025.
