Season 3 of Avatar: The Last Airbender is already in motion. Filming picked up right after Season 2 finished back in May 2025, without much pause between one and the other. That wasn’t out of nowhere. When Netflix announced the renewal, the plan was clear enough: two seasons, filmed back-to-back. Not stopping between them made sense, kept the story moving, and helped the pace hold steady
The show continues to adapt the original animated version released in 2005. That structure remains the foundation. Season 1 aligned closely with Book 1 of the source material. Now the final books are being brought to life in live-action. No release date has been confirmed, but filming updates have started to surface.

A quick update from the set
Daniel Dae Kim, who plays Fire Lord Ozai, shared details about the Avatar: The Last Airbender timeline in an interview with ScreenRant. He confirmed that filming for the new season is currently active.
“We're in the middle of shooting it right now. In fact, I just flew in from Vancouver last night from shooting.”
When asked how far along things were, he answered:
“Where are we? We're about a third of the way through.”
The remarks offer a clearer picture. About one-third of Season 3 has been filmed so far. Shooting is happening in Vancouver, which continues to serve as the main production location.

Back-to-back production
Filming Seasons 2 and 3 of Avatar: The Last Airbender one after the other was part of the initial plan. The announcement was made when both seasons were greenlit. Season 2 wrapped up in May, and work on the next season started immediately. This choice avoided a long break and kept the cast and crew moving forward together.
It also helped maintain continuity. The structure of the live-action version mirrors the animated one. The first season handled the events of Book 1. The two remaining seasons are expected to follow Books 2 and 3, although no episode details have been shared yet.
Additions to the cast
That same report brought in a few casting updates. Miya Cech is in; she’s playing Toph Beifong, who shows up in Book 2 of the animated run. Then there’s Jon Jon Briones, cast as Piandao. And Tantoo Cardinal joins as Hama. These aren’t new characters. They were already part of the original, so it’s more like they’re being brought in now, as expected.
Some of the actors from Season 1 are supposed to make a comeback as well. No other casting names have been announced so far.

Behind the scenes of Avatar: The Last Airbender: a change in creative leadership
Behind the scenes, there was a change in leadership after Season 1. Albert Kim, who served as the showrunner for the first season, stepped down. Two executive producers, Christine Boylan and Jabbar Raisani, are now leading the series.
Both Boylan and Raisani had already worked on the show, with Boylan serving as the co-executive producer and Raisani as executive producer, VFX supervisor, and director. They are now in charge as filming for the final chapters continues. There has been no indication of changes to the overall tone or direction of the adaptation.
Release schedule remains unclear
There’s been no word from Netflix about when the next seasons will arrive. Season 2 of Avatar: The Last Airbender has already finished filming, but a release window hasn’t been announced. Season 3 is still being shot. Considering how far along things are, it doesn’t seem likely that it will be ready before the year ends. So far, the only timing detail that came out was from Daniel Dae Kim. During an interview, he said they’ve filmed about a third of it.
Until official announcements are made, any release projections remain uncertain. It’s clear that one season is finished and another is still in progress. Both are moving forward under the same production team.

Storylines moving toward resolution
With filming active and returning cast members involved, the adaptation is reaching the final part of the original storyline. Toph, Ozai, Hama, and Piandao are characters from later arcs. Their inclusion signals a shift into the more dramatic chapters of the series.
In the most recent July 2025 interview with Collider, Daniel Dae Kim also revealed that the scale and approach to the upcoming seasons have been much more ambitious. He stated,
"We are currently shooting the initial block of Season 3. Every season we make seems to increase in scale. If viewers thought Season 1 was impressive, they will be amazed by Season 3. The approach to filming Seasons 2 and 3 has changed, which will bring a fresh and dynamic feel to the show."
What the update means for now
The remarks from Daniel Dae Kim offer a rare glimpse into where things stand. There haven't been many updates recently. This one confirms that production is active, and no delays were mentioned. Filming is happening, cast members are in place, and the back-to-back plan announced earlier is being carried out as expected.
As more filming milestones are reached, further updates may follow. For now, the show continues to move forward. Both seasons are on track, with progress confirmed directly by the cast.
