Ayo Edebiri’s new series, Prodigies, has taken a major step forward, with the show’s filming now officially underway. The highly anticipated Apple TV+ romantic comedy stars Edebiri and Will Sharpe, who also serves as the series creator, writer, and director. News of the production update comes after months of development and growing interest in the project.

According to entertainment news, the show is about the intricate life of a long-term relationship between two former child prodigies named Didi and Ren. Both Edebiri and Sharpe are also executive producers of the show, which promises to offer a unique take on classic romantic comedy fare.

The series explores what happens after the traditional ‘happily ever after.’ It also challenges what it means to fulfill early promise—and how those expectations influence grown-up relationships. To date, there has been no premiere date for Prodigies, though filming commenced during July 2025, marking an important milestone for the production.

Synopsis for Prodigies

Prodigies is a seven-part romantic comedy written solely for Apple TV+. The show features Ayo Edebiri as Didi and Will Sharpe as Ren. Both are former child prodigies who have been together since childhood.

Now in their early thirties, they wonder if their ordinary adult lives live up to the potential they showed as kids. As they question their relationship, they also grapple with wider issues of shared aspiration, private desire, and the reality of long-term relationships.

Concept and themes

Based on the show’s description, Prodigies takes an “unconventional spin” on the romantic comedy series. Rather than giving precedence to the traditional trajectory of a couple uniting, the show focuses on the days that follow the union.

It explores how daily challenges and internal conflicts appear in a relationship over time, particularly in individuals whose youth was defined by exceptional accomplishments.

The series hopes to dispel the ubiquitous myth in love stories that happiness comes automatically once individuals unite. Instead, it suggests that this is merely the start of fresh questions and dilemmas.

Behind the scenes and production information

Will Sharpe not only acts in the series but is also its writer, chief writer, and director. He comes with experience from productions such as The White Lotus and A Real Pain. Sister, an award-winning production company responsible for shows like Black Doves and Giri/Haji, produces the series.

Ayo Edebiri, who has received critical praise for her appearance in The Bear, is also executive producing alongside Sharpe. Other executive producers are Jane Featherstone, Naomi De Pear, and Katie Carpenter—all with impressive credits in TV production. The collective effort features a team familiar with both drama and comedy, as well as household names in streaming.

Character dynamics

The dynamic between Didi and Ren powers the narrative. Both have been in a relationship since childhood and now assess whether their current life reflects the expectations and possibilities placed on them when they were children.

The series tracks their path as they struggle with uncertainty, clash over one another’s ambitions, and attempt to balance personal satisfaction with their shared existence. The show focuses on how relationships evolve over time, touching on themes that many viewers can relate to.

Current progress and release timeline

Per recent shooting reports, Prodigies started production in July 2025. This has been confirmed by various entertainment media, reflecting tangible progress for the series.

No release date has so far been officially announced by Apple TV+, though more announcements can be expected as production proceeds. The seven-episode run format suggests a close-ended story, designed to tell a complete story in seven episodes rather than setting up multiple seasons.
