To honor the finest in cinema, the British Academy Film Awards, or BAFTAs, are presented annually. The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) is the organization that presents them. The awards, which currently take place in February, ahead of the Oscars, were first presented in 1949.
Nominations are open to films from throughout the globe, with British talent receiving special recognition. Mitzi Cunliffe, an artist, created a mask-shaped award for the winners. Additionally, BAFTA promotes education through activities and initiatives. The BAFTAs are well-known worldwide and are regarded as the premier film honors in the UK.
The BAFTA Television and Craft Awards, which will be held in April and May 2026, are already accepting entries. The new criteria allow all 6,000 voting members to choose International category winners and one non-UK team member in Craft entries. The P&O Cruises Memorable Moment Award, which is voted on by the public, returns. BAFTA seeks to recognize creative quality while reflecting the changing global television business.
More about BAFTA rules for 2026
BAFTA has recently announced the formal opening of the 2026 Television Awards. This has been done with P&O Cruises and the Television Craft Awards. These yearly celebrations pay tribute to the best on- and off-screen talent in British and international television. The awards recognize outstanding narrative, technical, and acting achievements across a range of television shows.
The BAFTA Television Craft Awards will be held on Sunday, April 26, 2026. Apart from this, the Television Awards with P&O Cruises will follow on Sunday, May 10, 2026, and both ceremonies will honor television programs broadcast in the United Kingdom between January 1 and December 31, 2025. There are 49 competing categories, ranging from acting and directing to editing, sound, and visual effects.
BAFTA has made substantial changes this year. The International division has seen one of the most substantial changes. For the first time, all 6,000 BAFTA voting members will vote on nominees and winners, and previously, the winners of the following stages were picked by a smaller jury.
This update reflects BAFTA's growing worldwide focus and allows for greater participation. It also highlights how international television has become, with many successful programs produced through cross-border cooperation.
Craft Award team applications are the subject of another significant modification, and as long as 80% of the team is UK-qualified and there is a valid basis for the exception, BAFTA will now allow one non-UK eligible individual to be included in teams of at least five. The growing number of foreign co-productions is reflected in this update, which also attempts to celebrate UK-based talent while acknowledging the current state of the business.
In 2026, the renowned P&O Cruises Memorable Moment Award will be given out again, and the public can only vote for this BAFTA TV award, which honors the year's most significant and unforgettable television moments.
Chris McCausland and Dianne Buswell's emotional performance helped Strictly Come Dancing win in 2025. Voting for the 2026 award will take place when the nominations are made public in March.
