Ballard, the Prime Video police drama based on Michael Connelly's Renée Ballard novels, was released on July 9, 2025.

The show stars Maggie Q as Detective Renée Ballard, head of a new LAPD department that is tasked with solving homicide cases that went cold years ago. Things get more interesting yet dangerous when one such case hints towards a serial killer and corruption within the department.

Right before completing a month since its release on August 9, it was announced that during its first week, the show was viewed over a billion minutes in the USA. Along with that, it has the third most viewed minutes for an original show.

Prime Video's Ballard surpassed a billion minutes viewed in its first week

Ballard is a spin-off of Bosch, the popular police procedural drama that ran on Prime Video (Amazon Prime at that time) from 2014 to 2021. This isn't the first spin-off that came from Bosch. Bosch: Legacy was the first Bosch spin-off, released in 2022 and concluded in April 2025.

For as long as both Bosch and Bosch: Legacy ran, the shows were widely popular and successful. Thus, it was partly expected for Ballard to have high views, thanks to the success of its predecessors and due to the fact that it belonged to the Bosch universe. But Ballard has surpassed expectations, according to what the show's official account posted on Instagram with the caption,

"Our new detective came out on top with over 1 Billion minutes viewed in the U.S. within its first week according to Nielsen rankings, and#3 overall amongst original series. Thank you #Ballard fans!"

This means a lot of things for the show. First of all, it makes the show much stronger in itself, and not just as a spin-off of another popular show. It shows that viewers wouldn't have watched the whole thing through if they didn't like it enough. This is an important milestone for both the show and Prime Video as it solidified Ballard's position on the platform.

Secondly, the show hasn't been officially renewed for a second season, which is a little surprising given how fast shows get renewed these days. Some shows even get renewed before the first season airs, but Prime Video is taking its sweet time.

Regardless, the fact that the show has surpassed a billion minutes viewed in the first week, takes it closer to getting renewed for a second season.

Other than Maggie, the cast includes Victoria Moroles, Courtney Taylor, Michael Mosley, Rebecca Field, Amy Hill, and John Carroll Lynch in key roles. The show has been developed by Michael Alaimo and Kendall Sherwood, who also serve as showrunners. It has been executive produced by Michael Connelly, Henrik Bastin, Michael Alaimo, Kendall Sherwood, Trish Hofmann, Jet Wilkinson, and Melissa Aouate.

Ballard is streaming on Prime Video.
