Amazon Prime has yet to renew Ballard for a second season, but a new update hints that a renewal is approaching. After being released on Prime Video on July 9, 2025, over one billion minutes of the show were viewed in the first week. It then went on to become one of the most popular shows of August on Prime Video, facing competition mostly by only The Summer I Turned Pretty.
While the show is yet to get officially renewed for a second season, an exciting update indicates that the renewal is likely going to happen soon. As Collider reports, the show has been awarded a substantial amount of money as tax credit.
Ballard is close to getting renewed for season 2
Ballard follows Renée Ballard (played by Maggie Q) as she leads the newly formed Robbery-Homicide Division of the LAPD, tasked with solving cold cases. The team is severely understaffed, but they do their best to solve crimes from years ago. Working through the cold cases, Detective Renée Ballard discovers a case that points towards a serial killer and a long-running chain of corruption in the police department.
Uptil now, the show has performed extremely well, having a full Rotten Tomatoes score of 100 on the Tomatometer. However, due to unknown reasons, Prime Video has not yet renewed the show for a second season. But, as Collider reports, that might change soon because Ballard has just been awarded a tax credit of $14.84 million by the California Film Commission.
A studio usually submits a project, hoping for tax credits only if it has been renewed for another season, or is expecting a renewal. Thus, the show getting the tax credit means either the show has already been renewed or will be in the near future. Prime Video is yet to make an announcement, hence we cannot confirm a renewal, despite there being obvious signs.
Ballard is a spin-off of other successful Prime Video shows, Bosch and Bosch: Legacy. Thus, fans had high expectations for the latest spin-off. Based on the show's popularity and consequential success, it has met and even exceeded some fan expectations. It would be unfortunate if Prime Video does not renew the show for a second season, as it can be a highly profitable show for them if it keeps running.
Other than Maggie Q, the show stars Courtney Taylor as Samira Parker, Michael Mosley as Ted Rawls, Rebecca Field as Colleen Hatteras, Victoria Moroles as Martina Castro, Amy Hill as Tutu, and John Carroll Lynch as Thomas Laffont in lead roles.
The recurring cast includes Noah Bean as Councilman Jake Pearlman, Michael Cassidy as Aaron, Ricardo Chavira as RHD Detective Robert Olivas, Alain Uy as Nelson Hastings, Hector Hugo as Captain Berchem, Brian Letscher as Ken Chastain, Kevin Dunn as Gary Pearlman, and Colin McCalla as Manny Santos, among others.
Several characters from Bosch and Bosch: Legacy play guest roles in Ballard, including Titus Welliver as Harry Bosch, Troy Evans as Barrel, Gregory Scott Cummins as Crate, Jamie Hector as Jerry Edgar, Stephen Chang as Maurice Bassi, and Mimi Rogers as District Attorney for LA Honey Chandler.
The show is developed by Michael Alaimo and Kendall Sherwood, who based the show on the novel series by Michael Connelly. Connelly is also the author behind Bosch and Bosch: Legacy. The show is produced collaboratively by Hieronymus Pictures, Fabel Entertainment, Alaimo Productions, Bitter Root Productions, and Amazon MGM Studios.
