BBC has announced a brand-new series from writer Jimmy McGovern starring Anna Maxwell Martin and Bobby Schofield titled Unforgivable. In true McGovern style, this series, much like his previous projects such as Cracker and Time, is also set to be radically honest and unwavering in its pursuit of bringing light to the darkest aspects of human nature.

The series is set to premiere on BBC Two and iPlayer on July 24, 2025, and BBC has also released an official trailer for the upcoming drama. Here's everything we know about the upcoming series from McGovern.

BBC has been having a year of hits with shows like Adolescence, experiencing global recognition and becoming the hotbed for much-needed critical conversations regarding the human psyche. McGovern's Unforgivable aims to shine a similar light on some of the darkest aspects of the human psyche through:

"the extensive ripple effect of abuse from multiple perspectives and how those involved can try to move forwards in the midst of the devastation"

According to Unforgivable's synopsis, it is set to follow the Mitchell family, who are suffering in the aftermath of being abused by one of their own. The show will be exploring the abuse from multiple perspectives through Joe, the abuser—who has been released from prison and is rehabilitated under a former nun, Katherine—and the abused, his sister Ana, her sons, and their father.

On one side, we have Joe, who says:

"No one hates me more than i hate myself"

And on the other side, we have Anna saying:

"How can someone you love be capable of something like that?"

The show aims at trying to explore how both sides of the coin are trying to figure out a way to move forward after everything has imploded. McGovern is quick to warn that the show is not going to be an easy watch in any situation, so one should be prepared before signing up for this much-needed watch:

"It’s a challenging film, yes, but I can’t wait for it to be shown."

Joe will be played by Bobby Schofield. The former nun/therapist will be played by Anna Maxwell Martin, and Anna will be played by Anna Friel. Additionally, Joe and Anna's father, David, will be played by David Threlfall, while the Adolescence star Austin Hayes and Fin McParland play Anna's sons.

The trailer features the cast, whom McGovern seems to adore:

"I can’t believe the cast and crew that have been assembled for this production."

It also introduces us to Joe in a therapy session with Katherine after he's released from prison. As he comes face-to-face with the family suffering owing to his actions, the trailer delivers the chilling effect, which will be reflected throughout Unforgivable.

Unforgivable also stars Mark Wormack, Paddy Rowan, and Phina Oruche in supporting roles, along with the rest of the main cast. Even though the series will debut in full on BBC iPlayer at 6 AM, it will air on BBC 2 from 9 PM.
