Belly might have to get married without one of her parents in The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3

The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3 premiered with its fourth episode, and Belly and Jeremiah are dealing with the fallout from Sussanah's memorial, where they announced their engagement in front of the entire family. Not surprisingly, none of the family members reacted well to Belly and Jeremiah's engagement announcement.

However, more than everybody else, Laurel, Belly's mother, was far from supportive and, in a way, hit the hardest with the announcement. Episode 4 went deeper into how Laurel and Belly's relationship was affected, and things are not looking great for Belly's wedding plans. It's so bad that Belly might be forced to get married this summer without her mother being a part of the wedding.

Laurel is the most affected by the wedding announcement in The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3

Everybody present at the memorial lunch, and even the ones who weren't, were affected by the wedding announcement from Jeremiah and Belly. Everybody felt blindsided and thought they were too young to make such a decision. Most of all, Laurel and Belly's relationship took a big hit because of the announcement.

The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3 Episode 4 placed the mother and daughter on opposite sides as Laurel tells Belly point blank that she will not support her in this decision, even if Belly decides to go through with it. Belly does not take well to this and storms off with Jeremiah, leaving her mother and her home behind.

The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3 episode opened on a hopeful note, where Belly was waiting for Laurel to come around so that she could go wedding shopping with her mom. However, Laurel, who is dead-set on ensuring that Belly and Jeremiah do not go through with the wedding, tells her that she can't go with her.

Heartbroken, Belly decides to go wedding dress shopping with Taylor and her mom, Lucinda, and ultimately finds a dress but misses Laurel the entire time. Later in the night, Jeremiah comes with a cake to celebrate Belly's birthday and to convince Laurel, but Laurel stands her ground, leading to a blowout between her and Belly in The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3.

Lola Tung, who plays Belly, revealed in a conversation with Entertainment Weekly how Belly is looking for her mom's approval and breaks down when she doesn't get it:

"I know that feeling of when you are trying to be your own person and make your own decisions, but your mom's approval still matters to you. Laurel and Belly are both very strong personalities. And Laurel raised Belly to be that way, but that means they butt heads sometimes. It's hard for both of them, even when they won't say it or admit it to each other, but everybody else can tell."

The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3 episode opened up a little more on this track when Laurel has a conversation with Belly's dad and her ex-husband. She explains why she isn't changing her mind. John and Laurel got married very young, much like Belly is planning for herself, and Laurel has experienced losing herself as a wife and a mother because of the early marriage.

"Being someone's wife. Being someone's mother, before I even knew who I was, I lost myself. And I know you think I blame you [John] for that, but I don't. I blamed myself, and I do not want that for her."

She hopes to prevent Belly from going through the same thing and feels helpless when she can't change her mind. Even though John tries to tell Laurel that Belly has to make and learn from her own mistakes, it appears that at the end of the day, Laurel is unable to watch her daughter make this mistake.

If Jenny Han's We'll Always Have Summer is any indication, it will take a special somebody to convince Laurel to attend Belly and Jeremiah's marriage in The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3. It might just be the person who saw Belly breaking down after realizing her mom really wasn't coming.
