The Shadow and Bone cancellation in 2023 came as a devastating blow to the fans of the show, but much more so for the cast and crew. Even though it appeared that Netflix's Shadow and Bone, based on the popular book series by Leigh Bardugo, would be another hit for the network, it was extremely surprising that, despite several storylines and a spin-off being set up, the show was scrapped after just two seasons.
Ben Barnes, in a recent conversation with Mama's Geeky while promoting his latest show, The Institute, revealed his disappointment regarding the show's cancellation, not for his sake, but for his cast members and some of the storylines that weren't able to be adapted into the show. Here's what he said.
Ben Barnes' disappointment at the Shadow and Bone cancellation

In the aftermath of the SAG-AFTRA strikes, Netflix cancelled a lot of shows, including Shadow and Bone. This came as an extreme surprise to fans since the show had a great reception, and fans were looking forward to another season after the giant cliffhanger in the Season 2 finale. Along with the show's cancellation, it was also announced that the Six of Crows spin-off, for which scripts were already written, would also not be adapted.
It appears as if the cast and crew had a similar experience in terms of disappointment, as revealed by Ben Barnes, who played General Aleksander Kirigan on Shadow and Bone. In a recent conversation regarding his upcoming show, The Institute, Barnes said that he was disappointed by the Shadow and Bone cancellation since he really enjoyed the show and the stories that it adapted as well.
He also added that he was particularly looking forward to some of the Crooked Kingdom stories and the Six of Crows stories being adapted on screen since he treasured reading those books. He also mentioned that he was extremely fond of the guys who were playing those characters, so it would have been a wild ride for him to watch the world expand and grow into the Six of Crows universe.
"It was a good show, and I love those stories. And I think, sadly, the best stories that Leigh Bardugo wrote, the Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom stories – I love those books – and I’m sad for the guys who were playing the crow characters, because they would have really gotten to expand on that world and those characters."
Barnes expressed something that the entirety of the Shadow and Bone fandom felt when the show, as well as the spin-offs' cancellation, was announced. It would've been truly remarkable for the fans to have the chance to witness the Six of Crows story be adapted on screen since this duology is even more loved by readers all over the world compared to the events in the original trilogy.
Despite the disappointment and rage expressed by fans online regarding the cancellation, Netflix did not reverse its decision, ending Shadow and Bone's future and, with it, the hopes of fans.
