If you missed watching Martin Clunes' famously grumpy doctor in Doc Martin, then it's time to watch him take another shot at medicine with Best Medicine. After spending twenty years on ITV, fans thought they had seen the last of Portwenn's famous doctor. Turns out, Clunes isn't done with medicine yet and will be crossing the Atlantic to star as Dr. Robert Best in Fox's upcoming remake, Best Medicine.
In Doc Martin, Clunes played Martin Ellingham, a genius surgeon who develops a phobia for blood, which leads to him discontinuing surgery practices. He then gets to work as the sole general practitioner in Portwenn as locals address him as Doc Martin, giving the show's name.
The American reboot reimagines the beloved British show for it's American audience, trading Cornwall's cliffs for a sleepy East Coast fishing village. The show will follow Josh Charles' Dr. Martin Best, a Boston surgeon who retreats from the city to start a new life. He is accompanied by his father Robert Best, who is determined to settle down after retirement.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Robert's character description reads,
“But underneath his snobby, stone-cold exterior. Robert is hiding a few secrets of his own that could turn Martin’s new life upside down, and force him to confront his past.”
Charles' character will deal with similar phobias as Clunes' role in Doc Martin, giving him the quirks that defined the original character. The show aims to adapt the dry British humor and small-town dynamics of Doc Martin into a fresh US setting.
