Netflix’s adaptation of the anime Kakegurui, titled Bet, premiered on May 15, 2025 with all 10 episodes dropping together. The official synopsis of the show reads:
“At a private school where gambling determines social status, a skillful new student with a mysterious past is shaking things up — and betting on revenge.”
Following Yumeko, Bet is full of twists and turns and it is not until the final episode that the whole picture becomes clear to the audience though some questions still linger even after that.
Let us now explore in detail what happens in Bet and why she kills Ray only to regret it after the act.
Yumeko causes disruption at St. Dominic’s Prep in Bet
Bet starts with Yumeko Kawamoto’s transfer to St. Dominic’s Prep, after being expelled from her previous school for engaging in gambling. St. Dominic’s Prep proves to be a good choice for Yumeko as it is not only a school for elites but also works on the basis of hierarchy where students have to beat each other in competitive games to maintain the lead.
Those who lose in these games are turned into house pets to the ones who beat them. It goes without saying that these games function on betting, with the amount one bets and the kind of bets one makes serve as determining factors of winning. All the students aim to get themselves into the student council by winning these games as only the top ten are allowed to be a part of it.
After her arrival Yumeko’s first acquaintance becomes Ryan, who has been made a house pet very recently and thus asks Yumeko to keep herself safe from the student council. However, Yumeko has her own goals and without paying any heed to Ryan, she willingly gets involved in trouble with members of the student council. Her bold behavior naturally attracts attention and after Ryan, she befriends another student named Michael.
Yumeko plays her first game against Mary and surprising everyone, she beats her even though Ryan helped Mary cheat. Mary gets eliminated from the student council and also becomes a house pet, in place of Ryan. This win gives Yumeko the status of a legendary figure who is clearly disrupting the established rules of order at St. Dominic’s Prep.

Yumeko joins St. Dominic’s Prep to take revenge in Bet
While Yumeko has a mysterious aura around her, it is eventually revealed that she is at St. Dominic’s Prep to avenge her parents' deaths. Her parents had died in a car crash that was clearly not an accident but a set up. Determined to find the ones responsible for the killing, she reaches St. Dominic’s Prep and eventually does find the truth.
Previously, the only knowledge that Yumeko had about her parents’ Keiko and Jo’s deaths was that they met someone named Ray before their death. Initially there is no other information about this Ray, but then Yumeko comes to know that the meeting between her parents and this man, Ray had mostly taken place at St. Dominic’s Kakegurui Club .
Investigating deeper to find out who Ray actually is, Yumeko realizes that he is Michael’s father. She also comes to know that it was not only Ray but the entire board of St. Dominic which was responsible for her parents' death.
It comes to light that Keiko and Jo were important members of Kakegurui Club and were also part of the school council. They contributed generously to the funds and thus they naturally had a say on how that money was going to be spent.
This is where the problem arose as when Yumeko's parents wanted to create a program that would help the needy with the money they provide, ad the idea did not sit well with the other members of the board.
They decided that the duo had to be stopped before they actually started with the process and thus they planned their murder and assigned Ray with the task of carrying it out.
Yumeko kills Ray in Bet
As Yumeko comes to know about the truth behind her parents' deaths, she goes ahead with her plan of killing Ray, although he alone was not responsible for the murder. However, as she kills him by poison, Ray tells her something that shocks her deeply and even makes her regret the murder for a while.
As his end moment comes near, Ray tells Yumeko that perhaps her mother is still alive. Yumeko had no idea about this and naturally she asks Ray for more information but he cannot say anything more and eventually dies.
As Ray’s words plant new seeds of questions in Yumeko’s mind, it now remains to be seen if she is able to find answers to those in the next season, in case it happens.
Bet can be streamed on Netflix.
