Bet, the Netflix series, based on the manga Kakegurui – Compulsive Gambler by Homura Kawamoto and Tōru Naomura, was released on May 15, 2025. The series follows Yumeko, a new transfer student at St. Dominic's Prep, who is a talented gambler. The school's social status is decided by who is better at gambling, and Yumeko challenges that.

The show is the live-action version of the anime Kakegurui and did exceptionally well in its first season. Bet has been renewed for a second season.

Bet is returning for season 2

The show's first season followed Yumeko joining St. Dominic's Prep, a prestigious boarding school ruled by underground gambling. In this school, social rank depends on winnings. The top ten earners join the influential Student Council and attend a retreat with the school’s governors at the end of the term. Losers become “House Pets,” and are treated exactly like that, forced to do menial labour for those they owe money to.

Yumeko, a talented gambler, finds allies in Mary, Ryan, and Michael and shakes the social order of the school with her gambling skills. But she has another motive: to expose which governor killed her parents. The show's official logline on Netflix reads,

"At a private school where gambling determines social status, a skillful new student with a mysterious past is shaking things up — and betting on revenge."

The show stars Miku Martineau as Yumeko. Martineau is known for her roles in Kate and Star Trek: Section 31. It also stars Eve Edwards as Mary, Ayo Solanke as Ryan, Hunter Cardinal as Michael, Clara Alexandrova as Kira, Anwen O’Driscoll as Riri, Aviva Mongillo as Dori, and Ryan Sutherland as Suki, among others.

The show has been produced by the company Boat Rocker, with Simon Barry, Jeff F. King, David Fortier, Ivan Schneeberg, Jon Rutherford, and Nick Nantell as executive producers.

When the show first came out, there was a general intrigue about whether the show would simply be a live-action version of the anime Kakegurui or bring something new. Showrunner and director Simon Barry told Netflix,

“When the Bet creative team set out to develop a series inspired by Kakegurui, we knew there was no point trying to reproduce the original, as it stands on its own and works perfectly.”
“Instead, we chose to be directed by the spirit Kakegurui inhabits in tone, audaciousness, and fun. To that end, we made something ‘birthed’ from the source material that inspired a new take — one that pays homage to it and doesn’t try to replace it.”

The show has stood by itself, and was in the global top ten English language shows on Netflix for the first three weeks after it came out. Now that it has been renewed for a second season, Variety reports that showrunner Barry Simon said in a statement,

“I’m extremely happy for our amazing ‘Bet’ fans from all over the world, who get to enjoy another season, and for this incredible cast and crew to return to St. Dominic’s for more gambling and general madness.”

Netflix is yet to reveal any information regarding the second season's filming, potential new cast, or release date. For now, you can stream Bet on Netflix.
