Betrayal: Under His Eye - Where is Justin Rutherford now? Details from the Hulu docuseries, explored

Hulu’s Betrayal: Under His Eye premiered on September 2, 2025. The three-part docuseries narrates the story of Justin Rutherford’s crimes that put him in prison. As per the docu-series, Rutherford had been s*xually abusing his stepson, Tyler, since he was 11 years old. However, he wasn’t the only victim as several others came forward.

Justin Rutherford was sentenced to prison in February 2024. He was found guilty of numerous charges, including r*pe and invasion of privacy for recording explicit videos, to plotting to kill his stepson from behind bars. Currently, he has been serving his sentence in Pennsylvania’s Albion State Correctional Institution.

The Hulu series explores how Rutherford’s crimes, which he had been committing since 2018, came to light after one of Tyler’s friends found a hidden camera in their bathroom.

Betrayal: Under His Eye- Discovery of Justin Rutherford’s crimes

Justin Rutherford and Tyler VanScyoc’s mother, Stacey, met in 2015 and were married in 2019. The couple had been living in Amity Township since then, with four of their kids. However, their lives were upturned when Justin’s criminal activities came to light.

On July 27, 2021, Police began searching the Rutherfords’ house after one of Tyler’s friends’ parent informed the police about him. The young boy had discovered an object in the bathroom while taking a shower in the Rutherfords’ residence. It was actually a hidden camera that looked like a black phone charger.

He took the camera home, and after retrieving the data, it was found that the camera captured everyone who went to the bathroom, and later, the mother of the boy reported this to the police. The search resulted in the collection of 1,400 images and 2,822 videos. Rutherford then escaped to the UK to protect himself.

That’s when his stepson, Tyler, revealed being s*xually abused by him. As per Hulu’s Betrayal: Under His Eye, other than Tyler, another of his friends also confessed that he had been molested by Tyler’s stepdad. On October 2, 2021, Rutherford was finally arrested when he returned to the US.

Betrayal: Under His Eye- The murder plot and trial

As per Betrayal: Under His Eye, even after being charged with multiple crimes, Rutherford tried to escape by plotting his stepson’s murder. While in prison, he instructed his godmother on how to kill Tyler “painlessly” without leaving any DNA, as he thought Tyler was the strongest witness, and his disappearance would hamper the case.

However, his plan was discovered before Tyler was harmed, resulting in another charge against him for attempt to commit first-degree murder. He pleaded guilty to all the charges against him including r*pe, and invasion of privacy, among others, in October 2022. He was also charged with the attempted murder plot against Tyler.

Betrayal: Under His Eye- Justin Rutherford serving his sentence

After entering a non-negotiated guilty plea in May 2023, the former doctor was sentenced to 26 to 70 years in prison in February 2024. An additional sentence of around 10 years was added for his attempt to kill Tyler.

Currently, the 36-year-old former doctor is serving his sentence in Albion State Correctional Institution in Pennsylvania.
