HBO's latest two-part docuseries, Billy Joel: And So It Goes, which was released on July 18, 2025, features the tumultuous life of singer Billy Joel, who became a rock legend for his generation.

The pop-rock icon, who is behind some of the most iconic songs of the 70s like Scenes from an Italian Restaurant, Just The Way You Are and She's Always a Woman, is a six-time Grammy winner and Rock & Roll Hall of Famer.

Directed by Susan Lacy and Jessica Levin, Billy Joel: And So It Goes will feature the artist's rise to stardom, laced with a difficult path with alcohol addiction and many failed marriages.

While Billy Joel was initially not interested in making the docuseries, his recent diagnosis of a brain disorder known as Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus and the end of his 10-year residency at Madison Square Garden led him to reconsider his decision.

More on this in our story.

Billy Joel: And So It Goes: HBO's latest docuseries will explore the untold story of the legendary singer

Legendary singer Billy Joel certainly needs no introduction. The artist made many headlines back in his day, both good and bad. While the world was going crazy over his numerous hit songs and albums, Billy Joel was struggling to maintain his fame and handle the stardom he had achieved through his talents.

HBO's latest docuseries will explore the untold story behind his stardom, ripping off the glossy veil from his life. Discussing the approach behind Billy Joel: And So It Goes, Levin discussed with The Hollywood Reporter:

“Our abiding principle was to let the music lead so that people could understand what made this artist tick, and what went into his music, and to get a peek behind his process but also an understanding of how his real-life experiences fed his music and his lyrics.''

The docuseries will feature his journey from an ordinary child in Long Island to his steady rise as the legendary singer he is today.

In addition to the Piano Man's enriching professional career, Billy Joel: And So It Goes will also feature the scandalous parts of his life, unlike the glossy music documentaries of this age.

As Billy Joel told Lacy and Levin, the docuseries will be a true picture of the artist's life, including his three failed marriages, money mismanagement, and his troublesome relationship with alcohol.

Billy Joel: And So It Goes will also feature exclusive interviews with Joel's wives and fellow artists

To help paint a vivid and truthful picture, Billy Joel: And So It Goes will also feature archival footage, home videos from his childhood, and performances from many of Joel's concerts, which will highlight the love he has amassed in his career.

In addition, fans will also get to see new interviews with his fellow artists, Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney, Pink, Nas, and his wives, Christie Brinkley, Katie Lee, and Elizabeth Weber.

Weber, Joel's first wife and manager, has played a pivotal role in shaping his music career, and Billy Joel: And So It Goes will be the first time she breaks her silence on her ex-husband.

In an interview with Variety, Lacy discussed how Weber needed some convincing to appear in the docuseries:

''We knew we wanted to interview all of them, but the tough one was Elizabeth...I had to really work hard on that. I told her that I wanted to tell her story. I said, “I think your story hasn’t been told. I think you’ve been misrepresented on social media. I think you’re a huge part of why Billy became Billy.”
