Spoiler Alert: The article contains spoilers for Andor Season 2, Episode 6.
In the Star Wars spinoff Disney+ series Andor Season 2, when we meet Bix Caleen (played by Adria Arjona), we find her broken and struggling with PTSD. During her interrogation by Dr. Gorst (played by Joshua James) in Season 1, he uses psychological torture methods to gain information from her. Even after her escape, she has vivid nightmares about him that leave her traumatized.
So, in Season 2, episode 6 titled ‘What a Festive Evening’, when Bix and Cassian Andor (played by Diego Luna) take revenge on Dr. Gorst, you can see Bix finally liberated from the mental chains holding her back.
While names such as Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, and Han Solo may hold superstar status in the rebellion, Andor brought forth several stories of the people behind the Rebel Alliance who made great personal sacrifices to fight the Empire.
Star Wars has always been about the rebellion, so this detour for Bix as she seeks justice for a personal trauma showcases that sometimes it is not always about the big picture.
While talking to Vanity Fair about Bix’s journey to find redemption, Adria Arjona said,
"[...]In season one, Bix is trying desperately to come back to her own, to that person that we all met in season one, episode one—so when I read that turning point for her here, it was like I finally got something for Bix to fight back. Just to press that button, to have that release, was incredible.”
What happened to Bix in Andor?
Bix runs a successful scrap business in Ferrix. In Season 1, Bix introduces Cassian to ‘Axis’ aka Luthen Rael (played by Stellan Skarsgård) when Cassian wanted to sell a stolen Imperial NS-9 Starpath Unit.
The Imperial Security Bureau (ISB), who are hunting Cassian arrive at Ferrix. The ISB officials arrest Bix to get information on Cassian and Axis. Dr. Gorst is an Imperial interrogator who is known for his terrifying methods of getting answers from prisoners.
During her intense interrogation in Episode 9 titled ‘Nobody’s Listening!’, Dr. Gorst tortures Bix by forcing her to hear the screams and pleas of dying Dizonites. Dizonites were a sentient species that were massacred by the Empire. Dr. Gorst would explain coldly about the torture equipment,
“[…]They make a sound as they die. A sort of, choral, agonized pleading. It was quite unlike anything anyone has ever heard before…We've taken the recordings and modified them slightly, layering, adjusting. And we found a section that we believe are primarily children, which has its own particular effect.”
Bix is left shattered after the experience and unable to recover even after escaping from the ISB.
Bix gets revenge on Dr. Gorst
In Season 2, images of Dr. Gorst continue to haunt her even after years. She turns to addiction and has sleepless nights, unable to overcome the traumatic experience. Though she wants to be strong and fight for the rebellion, she has become a shell of her former self.
In Episode 6, Bix finds Dr. Gorst’s location and sneaks into his workplace. Gorst tries to figure out who she is as Bix restrains him on the dreaded experimental chair. Bix switches on the interrogation machine, and as the device starts working, she leaves him in the room screaming.
Bix and Cassian exit from the premises and blast a bomb in the Imperial building. Bix is finally free and ready to take on the rebellion. Arjona shares,
“With everything that happens with her and Dr. Gorst, in the [season’s] first three episodes, you really understand how much she’s struggling with these nightmares. She’s sleep-deprived. By the time you get to four, five, and six, you see her coping with these nightmares in a very different way. She’s addicted to these droppers because she desperately wants to get better and wants to be a part of this rebellion and have a say—to have some importance with Cassian and Luthen.”
She added,
“She feels good enough to be like, This is what’s going to make me feel better. Revenge is what’s going to cure me. These droppers couldn’t, escaping couldn’t. Our love helps, but Cassian’s in and out. There’s so much happening that she wants to be a part of. To give it back to Dr. Gorst was such a big redemption, but again, it’s Tony Gilroy—it’s so much more complex than revenge.”
Andor is a Star Wars spinoff series created by Tony Gilroy. The show is a prequel to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016). Andor Season 2 is currently streaming on Disney+.
