The Blindspot season 5 series finale left fans with a very controversial and emotional conclusion. The last episode, "Iunne Ennui," concludes Jane Doe's story with an intense confrontation and a plot twist that has generated a lot of debate. The plot comes full circle to the place it started: Times Square.
Jane and her team can disarm a lethal ZIP bomb that will otherwise cause a collective memory erase in New York City. But the question that remains is—did Jane make it, or was her fairy-tale ending just a fantasy? The finale gives two possible endings.
In one, Jane is reunited with her friends and family at a dinner party, having a joyful time, and there is hope for her future. On the other hand, Jane dies from ZIP poisoning in Times Square, and her life ends as it started, in a bag in the middle of the city.
The ending being left open to interpretation has been the subject of debates as to which is real until showrunners and official recaps indicated a more serious finale. Jane's dying moment is probably a hallucination, the last favor from her mind before she succumbs to ZIP poisoning.
Jane's struggle with ZIP poisoning in Blindspot season 5
Across Blindspot season 5, Jane battles the lethal specter of ZIP poisoning. ZIP is an amnestic chemical that has been at the forefront of the series' plot since the start. At the end of the episodes, Jane is exposed to a huge dose of ZIP when attempting to thwart Ivy Sands, the main villain of the season.
Even though Jane gets an antidote, it's not potent enough to reverse the effects because she's been previously exposed to ZIP. Therefore, Jane spends most of the finale hallucinating about people from her past life, such as former nemeses and loved ones.
These visions direct her and assist her in piecing together Ivy's plan. Although she is worsening, Jane does not take another dose of the antidote herself right away. She feels that the hallucinations are assisting her in solving the case. As a result of her decision, she and the team go to Times Square and manage to find and disarm the ZIP bomb.
Jane's health, however, quickly deteriorates after the operation, and she faints in the same spot where her life as Jane Doe had started.
The dual endings of Blindspot season 5: Reality vs. Hallucination
The Blindspot season 5 finale shows two endings, one after the other. Vectors first witness Jane and Weller disarm the bomb and kiss each other. Jane then dies, and paramedics rush to her, but unfortunately, she is dead. This scene makes it seem as if Jane had died from ZIP poisoning, where her journey ends at the point of beginning—in a bag in Times Square. The show instantly shifts to a supposedly ideal dinner party.
Jane, Weller, and their group of friends are all together, content and at ease. Patterson and Rich are seen scheming new exploits, Zapata is a mother and a private investigator, and everyone seems to have transitioned into well-rounded lives. This scene is disrupted, though, when Jane notices that everything seems too perfect.
She then has a flashback to her collapse, revealing that the ending is a hallucination brought on by her death. Showrunner Martin Gero did remark on the uncertainty, but evidence in the episode leads to the conclusion that Jane's death is actually the ending. The hallucinated dinner scene is one of the final comforting visions that Jane has as she dies.
The significance of Jane's fate in Blindspot season 5
Jane's death at the end of Blindspot season 5 is symbolic. The series opens with her arriving in Times Square out of a bag with no recollection, and it concludes with her departing the world in like fashion. This bookending impacts what ZIP has meant and what has become of her life as Jane Doe.
The fantasized happy ending is an expression of Jane's wish for harmony and resolution, and it gives audiences an idea of what might have been were things otherwise. The double endings are also a commentary on the series' themes of identity, memory, and redemption. Jane's path is one of loss, sacrifice, and the constant battle to regain her life. She achieves some peace, if only in her head.
