BMF is a STARZ drama series about the Black Mafia Family, who were in the business of dealing drugs. The show follows the founders of the Black Family, Demetrius and Terry Flenory, who created one of the most successful crime empires in America, and their eventual downfall.

The show was first released on September 21, 2021, and has run for 4 seasons to date, and the fourth season aired from June 6, 2025, to August 15, 2025. Now, a few months after the show wrapped up its fourth season, as Deadline reports, Starz has cancelled the show.

Possible reasons why BMF was cancelled?

BMF isn't just a show about a crime family; it is based on the real-life story of how brothers Demetrius and Terry Flenory created a successful business in the 1980s, and how it ultimately came to an end. While the show has been a popular one, STARZ has made the decision to cancel it.

While no official reason has been provided for the cancellation, Deadline reported that it could be due to a long-running feud between one of the show's executive producers, Curtis Jackson, and the real-life Demetrius Flenory. The two started having issues when Curtis accused Flenory of having a federal informant. Whether or not we know how true those claims were, Flenory has denied them strongly.

This situation further deteriorated when Demetrius did a promo with Jackson's longtime rival, Rick Ross. The feud between Jackson and Demetrius has been public information for some time. However, it's not the reason behind the cancellation, even though it probably did affect the environment on set. Back in April 2025, STARZ was still considering a Season 5, and as Deadline reported back then, a close source had said that STARZ

“is pleased with Season 4 creatively”

and that they were

“looking forward to sharing new action-packed episodes with fans.”

Something clearly did not go as expected, and thus, BMF got cancelled after four seasons and a cliffhanger featuring Demetrius' arrest. The real reason behind the cancellation has not yet been confirmed, but it could be a follow-up to what STARZ's CEO, Jeffrey Hirsch, intended to achieve by the end of 2025.

Back in March, as Deadline had reported, Hirsch expressed how it would be more beneficial to create new shows than to continue existing ones. It becomes much more expensive to create more seasons of existing shows since one has to pay the cast more for growing seasons. Besides, the cost of production increases as well. Thus, the BMF cancellation might just be another way to cut costs. For instance, most of the shows of the Power franchise are coming to an end, and a spin-off, Power: Origins, is in the works. BMF's story might come back as a spin-off, but it is yet to be confirmed.

BMF stars Demetrius Flenory Jr. as Demetrius Flenory, Da'Vinchi as Terry Flenory, Russell Hornsby as Charles Flenory, Michole Briana White as Lucille Flenory, Eric Kofi-Abrefa as Lamar Silas, Ajiona Alexus as Katherine Eder, Myles Truitt as B-Mickie, Steve Harris as Detective Von Bryant, La La Anthony as Markeisha Taylor, and Kelly Hu as Detective Veronica Jin, among others.

The show has been executive-produced by Curtis Jackson, Randy Huggins, Terri Kopp, Anthony Wilson, Anne Clements, and Tasha Smith. The production companies behind the show are 8 Mile Sconi Productions, Lionsgate Television, and G-Unit Films and Television Inc.

BMF is streaming on Lionsgate Play and Starz.
