Boarders, the British comedy-drama, released its second season on BBC Three and BBC iPlayer on 3rd February 2025. It was released in the USA on Tubi on 17th April 2025, and a third season is on the way. On 12th June, Boarders, BBC, and BBC iPlayer made a collaborative post announcing that the show has been renewed for a third season.
There's a lot to unpack in season three after season two's events. Season two picked up after the events of season one and began with acting headmistress Carol Watlington-Geese announcing that, due to funding issues, two out of the five scholarship students would be removed from the school.
While the entire season explores the show's core themes of race, class, and portrays the reality of the education system, the finale brings us face to face with the revelation of which two students are made to leave St Gilbert's.
Boarders season 2 finale: Who gets kicked out of St Gilbert’s?
Boarders follows five black students, Jaheim Marsham, Leah Dulverton, Omar Palmer-Grace, Femi Adebayo, and Toby Staithes, as they maneuver their way through St. Gilbert's. The BBC description for the show reads,
Brace yourselves - the new kids are here. Five talented black scholarship students, and an elite private school with a reputation problem. One of them will have to change...
The Boarders season two finale is a blend of heartbreak and celebration. With two of the five scholarship students set to leave St Gilbert’s due to funding cuts, emotions are running high. Instead of letting the tension consume them, the group decides to enjoy one last night together at the school spring party.
The final episode focuses on Jaheim, who’s been a central figure throughout the season. It starts with a difficult video call with his mother, Grace. Their strained relationship is clear, and it sets the tone for the rest of his story. Things get more complicated when Jaheim’s secret relationship with Florence is exposed, causing issues with Beatrix. He’s left facing judgment from both friends and classmates, but tries to stay grounded.
The finale reveals that Jaheim and Omar are the two students who will be leaving the school. Instead of breaking down, Jaheim chooses to embrace the moment. He allows his younger brother to stay with their mum and joins the others at the party, embracing what might be his last memory made at the school.
But just as things calm down, Jaheim gets unexpected news. Earlier in the season, he applied for an American summer school program. Though he didn’t make it into MIT, his teacher Mackers recommended him to another prestigious school, the Midwest.
There’s just one little problem: it’s not a short program. It’s a full-year exchange, which starts next term. The season ends on this major cliffhanger, leaving Jaheim and viewers wondering what comes next. What lies ahead for Jaheim and the rest of the boarders?
With Boarders renewed for season three, the big question is whether Jaheim will return. If he goes to America, it’s a chance for him to grow. But his absence could shift the balance of the group. The spotlight might move to the other students, Femi, Leah, Toby, and Omar, and give their stories more space to shine.
Still, the show is rooted in British classism and school life. Moving the story overseas might risk losing the show’s unique storyline. Season three could bring big changes, and whether Jaheim stays or not, the show will continue to tell the story of the five protagonists and the way they overcome obstacles.
Boarders is streaming on Tubi in the USA.
