It's always intriguing to find out just how different a TV show might have been in the background, and when 9-1-1 was still in early development, there were initial thoughts of coupling Bobby Nash with Abby Clark. Yes, that Bobby and that Abby. Although the series never actually did pursue that romance, the likelihood of them actually making it happen raises an enormous question: what would the show have lost if that coupling had been made canon?
Actually, the concept of "Bobby and Abby" was solid enough that it was being considered as a possible storyline. But the show decided to go another way—and that one choice could have maintained 9-1-1's best emotional center: Bobby and Athena. That is correct; the abandoned romance between Bobby and Abby could have kept the show from showing its best and most naturally formulated relationship.
The original plan: Bobby and Abby's early chemistry in 9-1-1
Early in 9-1-1's first season, both Bobby and Abby were also brought in as core characters with intense personal issues. Bobby was quietly grappling with the grief of losing his family, while Abby struggled with her mother's health decline. Their shared vulnerability and understanding initially fueled the rumors among fans—and it seems writers were also contemplating developing a romantic relationship between them.
The showrunners allegedly flirted with the possibility of moving Bobby and Abby together, both as co-workers and also as romantic interests. Although the two did share a moment where it was clear they had an emotional investment, the show wisely decided against seeing where that would go. Instead, Abby's subsequent (and short-lived) romance with Buck was played out, and Bobby's storyline went in a completely different direction.
Why the Bobby-Abby romance wouldn't have worked in 9-1-1
Although Bobby and Abby were emotionally complex, a romantic relationship between them might have been forced and unevenly toned. Bobby's introspective and brooding personality was almost opposite that of the more openly emotional Abby. Although sometimes opposites attract, in this instance, their bond was more based on mutual respect and shared loss than potential romance.
Additionally, the timing was never really right. Abby departed the show at the end of Season 1, and her reappearance in Season 3 marked the end of her narrative with Buck. If Bobby and Abby had been in a romantic relationship, it could have made her departure, as well as Bobby's personal development path, that much more complicated.
Athena and Bobby: The emotional backbone of 9-1-1
When Bobby finally fell in love with Athena, the series cemented one of its greatest and most healthy relationships. Theirs was not a relationship forged overnight—it was slow-burning, deep, and grown-up. Both characters entered the relationship bringing emotional scars with them, but rather than letting it break them, they helped each other heal and accept.
Athena's toughness and Bobby's stoic fortitude were such an evenly matched pairing that they anchored the show in a realistic and grounded dynamic. Their interaction wasn't an afterthought—a plot point every now and then—it was the emotional core of 9-1-1, leaving viewers feeling secure in the middle of the show's high-stakes rescues and rescue drama.
Holding on to the show's strongest dynamic
Had Bobby been initially paired with Abby, chances are the Bobby-Athena romance would never have occurred. And that would have been a great loss for the series. Their love not only symbolizes emotional maturity and second chances but also lends substance to the possibility that healing can happen after great personal loss.
Athena and Bobby's collaboration also combined two disparate worlds of the show—the LAPD and the LAFD—giving way to more layered storylines and character work. Their relationship facilitated deeper discussions on family, mourning, justice, and recovery, taking the show above proceduralizing.
A what-if that was better left unexplored
Ultimately, Bobby and Abby's could-have-been romance is one of the more intriguing "what ifs" of 9-1-1 history. But it's a plot that played better on the editing room floor. By avoiding that coupling, the show maintained its strongest relationship—and in doing so, provided audiences with one of the most authentic depictions of love and healing on network TV.
Occasionally, the greatest storytelling choice is simply knowing what not to do. And in this instance, 9-1-1 got it right.
