• Richard Madden as PS David Budd – A Scottish veteran of the Afghanistan War and who is now a dedicated Principal Protection Officer. Budd in Bodyguard struggles with PTSD and is prone to volatile behavior. He is assigned to protect Julia Montague, whose politics he does not like.

• Sophia Rundle as Vicky Budd – She is David’s wife and the mother of two children. She works as a sister at a London hospital, and David’s PTSD causes estrangement in their relationship.

• Keeley Hawes as Home Secretary Julia Montague – She is a member of the Conservative Party and is a Member of Parliament for the constituency of Thames West. She wants to be the PM, and her additions to the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000, dubbed “RIPA-18”, which would lead to greater powers for the authorities to investigate personal information of an individual, have led to her having many enemies.

• Vincent Franklin as MP Mike Travis – He is a Minister of State for Counter Terrorism, who becomes resentful over being excluded from Montague’s dealings with the MI5.

• Nicholas Gleaves as MP Roger Penhaligon – He is the Government Chief Whip and Member of Parliament for Surrey North. He is Montague’s ex-husband and is suspicious of the political ambition of Montague.

• Pippa Haywood as CSI Lorraine Craddock – She is Budd’s commanding officer at the Protection Command, and she assigns Budd to protect Montague.

• Stuart Bowman as Stephen Hunter-Dunn – He is the Director General of the Security Service (MI5). His powers will be significantly enhanced by RIPA 18. Montague's preference for MI5 puts him at odds with Sampson.
