Bookish, the British crime drama created by Mark Gatiss, was released on 16th July on U&Alibi to much success. The show scored 100% on the Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer and was renewed for a second season before the first was released.
Now, an image was posted by U&Alibi on Instagram, showing Mark Gatiss at the read-through for season two, indicating that the upcoming season is much closer than anticipated.
Bookish season 2 update
Bookish is a British crime drama created by Mark Gatiss, which stars Gatiss as Gabriel Book, a bookstore owner who helps solve crimes in London in 1946. He is joined by his wife Trottie Book (played by Polly Walker), who runs the wallpaper shop next door, and a group of good-hearted misfits who help him solve crimes.
The official logline for the show, according to U&Alibi, reads:
"Fom the mind of Mark Gatiss, co-creator of Sherlock, comes a novel detective. Set in post-war London Bookish follows bookseller Gabriel Book (played by Gatiss) who helps the police solve the strangest of crimes and the knottiest of murders -while hiding his own secrets."
The six-episode first season was released on U&Alibi on July 16, and a second season has been greenlit. U&Alibi has now announced on their official Instagram account that season two scripts are ready and the cast has read them.
The post had the following caption:
"Today, we had a read through of the briliant scripts for Bookish Series 2! Roll on 2026."
It continued:
"Watch the first series of Bookish on Sky and Virgin Media."
This was accompanied by a picture of Mark Gatiss, who attended the read-through both as co-creator and main lead. While there is no specific date for a release, the network confirmed that the second season will begin production in 2026.
Other than Mark Gatiss and Polly Walker, the show stars Elliot Levey as Inspector Bliss, Connor Finch as Jack, Buket Kömür as Nora, Daniel Mays as Eric Wellbeloved, Blake Harrison as Sergeant Morris, and Joely Richardson as Sandra Dare. It also stars Jonas Nay as Felix, Rosie Cavaliero as Mrs.Dredge, Jacob Fortune-Lloyd as Stewart Howard, Tom Forbes as Mickey Hall, Amanda Drew as Nerina Bean, Michael Workéyè as Billy, Ella Bruccoleri as Merula Harkup, and Luke Norris as Jesse Mackendrick.

The series is written by Mark Gatiss and Matthew Sweet and produced collaboratively by the companies Eagle Eye Drama and Happy Duck Films. The show has been directed by Carolina Giammetta, produced by Christopher Arcache, and executive produced by Jo McGrath and Walter Iuzzolino.
This isn't Mark Gatiss's first time writing a detective show or starring in it. Gatiss also co-created the widely popular show, Sherlock, which ran on the BBC from 2010-2017. He also played the role of Mycroft Holmes on the show.
Given Gatiss's experience in the genre, the critical success Bookish has already earned, and season two coming up, the show might just become as successful as Sherlock. Gatiss's other roles include playing Tycho Nestoris in Game of Thrones, Stephen Gardiner in Wolf Hall, and Peter Mandelson in Coalition.
Bookish is streaming on Sky and Virginia Media.
