Jamie Campbell Bower’s transformation into Vecna remains one of the most unsettling elements of Stranger Things and much of that impact comes from the character’s haunting voice.

While the visual design of the Upside Down’s primary antagonist is striking on its own, it is Vecna’s measured, almost intimate way of speaking that truly sets him apart from the show’s previous villains. In a series defined by supernatural spectacle, Bower’s vocal performance brought a chilling sense of control and psychological menace, which elevated Vecna from a monster to a deeply personal threat.

In a recent interview with Wired, the Stranger Things star revealed the origin story of his dark booming voice:

''Vecna voice was born out of lockdown.''

The actor opened up about the meticulous process behind perfecting Vecna’s voice, revealing that it was far from a simple case of speaking in a deeper tone. Rather than relying on heavy vocal distortion or post-production effects, he focused on rhythm, breath control and subtle changes in tone to convey authority and quiet rage.

More on this in our story.

Before the final episodes of Stranger Things hit Netflix, Bower is revealing the details behind his iconic Vecna voice. While fans were initially surprised to discover the monster's voice actually comes from the 37-year-old actor, it is now one of the most impressive behind-the-scenes details about the show. Ever since Jamie Campbell Bower's critical acclaim, the actor is often asked to mimic the entity's voice in interviews and talk shows, which he happily obliges.

In the recent 'Web's Most Searched Questions' segment with Wired, Bower revealed the backstory of his Vecna voice and his inspiration for this iconic detail about his character. Bower credits Hellraiser as one of his inspirations, after he rediscovered it during the lockdown:

''One of the references that I sort of rediscovered and stumbled upon was um Hellraiser. It was the sort of VHS and Blockbuster when I was a kid that you'd see and you'd be like, "Oh my god, what is that?" And so upon watching it, I was like, "Oh, wow." Like, "This is where it's going to come from for me. This is the beginning of it for sure."

While the Duffer Brothers had a basic outline of Vecna's character in Stranger Things Season 4, Bower was left in charge of many aspects, including the distinct voice of the monster, which was described as a ‘deep, booming voice' emerging from the darkness. Vecna's victims still have nightmares about his booming voice, which is all thanks to Bower.

In many interviews, Jamie Campbell Bower has revealed how Doug Bradley's iconic villain 'Pinhead' from the Hellraiser franchise was a strong influence on his character, who also had a distinct and impressive voice in the films.

Jamie Campbell Bower's singing background helped him perfect Vecna's voice in Stranger Things

While Bradley's beautiful villain provided initial inspiration for the Vecna voice in Stranger Things, it was ultimately Bower's singing talent that helped him perfect the monster's eerie tone. For the uninitiated, Bower was the frontman of the London-based band Counterfeit from 2015 to 2020, following which he embarked on a solo musical career and released his own music.

The Stranger Things star detailed how he perfected the monster's voice by repeated practice and relaxing his vocal cords:

''I've been fortunate enough to kind of know how that part of my body works. And actually, ultimately, it it comes from being more relaxed and just allowing my larynx to open, using my diaphragm in a little bit better way. Because when we are stressed or whatever, like everything goes like this and you can't do anything. So it's actually ultimately just about purely letting go and and purely just relaxing into it. So I I never have to vocal rest ever.''

Bower's comments prove why the actor received such critical acclaim for portraying Vecna in the final two seasons. The recently released episodes from Stranger Things Season 5 saw Vecna returning with greater force after the Hawkins gang torched him in the previous season.

Tune in to Stranger Things Season 5 Part 2 on Netflix on Christmas to see Jamie Campbell Bower's Vecna in action again.
