CBS' latest police procedural drama, Boston Blue starring Donnie Wahlberg and Ernie Hudson, is all set to bring back a familiar face from the original Blue Blood series.
Kathryn Bridget Moynahan, who played Erin Reagan, the ADA of New York County, will reprise her role in the premiere episode of Boston Blue. Additionally, Moynahan is also set to direct a few episodes of the series.
Created by Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis, this Blue Bloods spin-off will delve into the life of Danny Reagan, Erin's brother and a former LAPD detective. Danny takes a position in the Boston Police Department, where he's paired with Detective Lena, who also comes from an influential law enforcement background.

Kathryn Bridget Moynahan joins the cast of Boston Blue as an actor and director
On Friday, July 18, 2025, Donnie Wahlberg, who plays Danny on Boston Blue, shared the update on his Instagram. Posting a candid photo with Moynahan, he shared his excitement of reuniting with his onscreen sister and captioned it as,
"Reunited and it feels so good! So excited to have my dear friend and TV sister Bridget Moynahan join me for a special guest appearance in the premiere episode of # BostonBlue. She’ll also be bringing her incredible directing talents to the show this season! More fun (and surprises) to come. 👀 Let’s go!"
Boston Blue picks up after Danny makes a bold move, leaving NYPD for a new post with Boston Police Department. His relocation isn't just a change of evironment-it marks a pivot in tone and tempo, something Blue Blood fans haven't seen from the Reagan family.
CBS's decision to bring Moynaham into the pilot signals a clear intention: to bridge the old plot with the new. Erin's presence in Boston won't offer the emotional continuity for longtime fans, and thus, the presence of familiar faces grounds the spin-off into the moral and familial weight that Blue Blood carries.
Whalberg also teased that there might be a few more familiar faces from Blue Bloods who could reprise their roles in the upcoming series. Additionally, Moynahan, who has previously helmed a few episodes of Blue Bloods, will also direct an episode or two for the upcoming series.
In addition to Wahlberg and Moynahan, the new cast members of the series include Sonequa Martin-Green, Maggie Lawson, Ernie Hudson, Gloria Reuben, and Marcus Scribner. Joining the cast is Mika Amonsen, who is set to play Sean, Danny's son, who' now a Boston PD officer.
When will Boston Blue release?
Boston Blue will premiere on October 17, 2025, returning to the Friday 10 pm slot that Blue Bloods held for more than a decade. The timing seems intentional. CBS isn't just launching a spin-off, it's reclaiming the timeslot that delivered consistent viewership to the OG series.
With Wahlberg leading and Moyahan back in action, and a new cast ready to shake their claim, Boston Blue is poised to extend the Reagan story without retreading old ground.
