Breaking Bad fans can't wait for the new and upcoming Vince Gilligan show. Apple TV+ recently dropped the first teaser poster for the show. The title is still not confirmed, but the image says a lot. It is bold, yellow, and gives off a very particular vibe. The poster features a simple cotton swab sketching out a smiley face, with the line:
“From the creator of Breaking Bad.”
That’s it. It is mysterious and intriguing enough to get people talking.
But for anyone who has seen the cult British thriller show from 2013, Utopia, this new teaser might trigger some serious deja vu. The color palette, the minimalism, the looming sense of something deeply wrong under the surface, it's all a bit familiar.
Most likely, it is not a conscious nod but just a stylistic overlap. But the resemblance is uncanny. Utopia is an underrated gem with a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score that has a cult-like status because of its themes as well as visuals.
Let's know a bit more about the British thriller.
Breaking Bad creator’s new show teaser poster reminds us of Utopia (2013)
If you have never watched Utopia, now is the time to put it on your watchlist. Created by Dennis Kelly and aired on Channel 4 in the UK, this mind-bending conspiracy thriller is one of the most visually striking and narratively daring shows of its decade.
Utopia follows a group of strangers who stumble upon a manuscript of a cult graphic novel that supposedly predicts real-world disasters. Pandemics, to be specific. They are soon hunted by a shadowy organization known only as The Network. And what happens after that is a tale of power, control, and moral compromise.
Utopia stands out because of its premise. But there are more reasons why this 2013 thriller drama has a perfect Rotten Tomatoes score. The show executes its plot in a very compelling way. The cinematography is jaw-dropping. It uses saturated colors to contrast with brutal violence and emotionally raw storytelling. The show doesn't shy away from disturbing themes either. It asks big questions about population control, survival, and sacrifice.
Despite being short-lived with just two seasons, Utopia built a passionate fanbase and still holds that rare 100% Rotten Tomatoes score. Even Breaking Bad doesn't have a perfect score. It has a 96% Rotten Tomatoes score.
The series features actors like Alexandra Roach, Adeel Akhtar, Paul Higgins, Fiona O'Shaughnessy, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, and Neil Maskell. It is produced by Kudos Film and Television.
An American remake by Amazon (with Gone Girl's Gillian Flynn) landed in 2020, but it failed to reach the same status. The original remains the definitive version. And if Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan’s new project even remotely channels the same unsettling energy, we’re in for something special.
