Breaking Bad is a crime drama television series that ran between 2008 and 2013. It was created and showrun by Vince Gilligan and premiered on AMC. The show consists of five seasons and 62 episodes. Here's the official synopsis as per IMDb:

"A chemistry teacher diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer turns to manufacturing and selling methamphetamine with a former student to secure his family's future."

Giancarlo Esposito plays the role of Gustavo 'Gus' Fring on the show. He reportedly did not want to audition for this role. So there's a thin chance that one of the most memorable characters in television history might not have happened.

Giancarlo Esposito plays the role of the antagonist Gustavo 'Gus' Fring on Breaking Bad. The character runs a fast-food restaurant only to hide his drug operations. He was speaking at Rider University in 2014, where he said the following about his character:

"That's me, this is who I am. I’m a dude who’s hiding in plain sight, afraid to say who I really am or live as who I really am for fear that people would go, ‘Oh, wait, he’s a fraud, he ain’t real."

However, Esposito almost did not get this role, as he didn't want to audition for a guest role. The character eventually became a series regular in the third and fourth seasons. Esposito then confronted AMC, as he thought his salary was low. The network agreed to his terms.

He said,

“They helped me to make that work and the rest is history. When you get really truthful and honest about who you are and what you need...the universe greets you, it hears you."

Esposito's performance was praised, and he was bestowed with several accolades, including Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series at the 2014 Critics' Choice Television Awards.

Breaking Bad is about a high school chemistry teacher who is diagnosed with the third stage of lung cancer. He then starts cooking and selling crystal meth with his ex-student Jesse Pinkman. This is done so that he can secure his family's future. After a point, Walter White realizes that he needs to expand his drug operation to earn more money. This is where he crosses paths with Gus Fring.

Other cast members of the show include

  • Bryan Cranston as Walter White
  • Anna Gunn as Skyler White
  • Laura Fraser as Lydia Rodarte-Quayle
  • Aaron Paul as Jesse Pinkman
  • Jesse Plemons as Todd Alquist
  • Dean Norris as Hank Schrader
  • Betsy Brandt as Marie Schrader

The show was a major critical success and took home several awards. It was followed by a prequel television series called Better Call Saul.
