Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 5 recap: Josh and Oliver team up for a difficult case

Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 5 titled 'Once Upon a Time in America' was unlike other episodes that usually start with the patient of the week. The episode instead starts with Josh Nicols cleaning up a messy OR room and wiping off blood from his medical gear. Josh's condition makes it evident that a tragedy has transpired in this OR and we finally see the brothers who will end up here. The scene then shifts to 17 hours ago, when Josh is introducing Wolf to the new head nurse, Nico Silva.

In Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 5, Josh asks Wolf to work together with Silva but their conversation is halted as two patients needs immidiate surgery. Jorge and Benny are wheeled in, two window repairers who tragically fell from the 39th floor while repairing an office window. Since both of the brothers are in critical condition, Josh and Wolf teams up to save them.

Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 5 recap: Anna wants Josh to focus on Jorge

While the brothers are fighting for their lives in the operating room, their mother, Anna, arrives at the hospital. Since she only speaks spanish, Ericka help others by translating for her. When Anna is told that Benny is out of danger and will likely pull through, she is not concerned about him. She puts a Christian necklace around Josh's neck and asks him to save her son Jorge. Anna doesn't seem to care much about Benny.

In Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 5, while Josh and Wolf were trying their best to save Jorge and Benny, Ericka and Carol were keeping their mother company. She reveals how she had to bring her boys to New York but she wanted them to keep their Christian faiths intact. While Jorge remained a Christain, Benny adapted the Western lifestyle and took many questionable decisions. However, when he rejected his faith in God and Christianity, that is when Anna lost hope in him. Still, Carol convinces Anna to see Benny.

Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 5 recap: Benny struggles to understand Spanish

Jorge remains critical in Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 5, but Benny finally wakes up after his surgery. While this is good news, there is surely some problem as Benny cannot understand any Spanish Silva and Ericka are speaking. Upon checking his nuerological pathways, Wolf concludes that while Benny's memory is intact, he is suffering from Bilingual Aphasia, often caused after a head injury. Since languages are stored in different parts of the brain, Benny's head injury affected his Spanish-speaking part of the brain, which is why he has forgotten his mother tongue but can still understand English.

While Josh struggles to save Jorge during surgery, Wolf gives a minor language test to Benny to bring his Spanish-speaking skills back.

While Anna agrees to see Benny in Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 5, she starts blaming him for Jorge's fall as soon as she enters his room. While Benny could not understand his mother, Silva translates him for Anna. However, Silva willingly mistranslates Benny's words and instead says everything Anna wants to hear, including how Benny will accept God.

Just when Anna is happy and accepting her son, Benny starts to seizure and is wheeled into the OR.

Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 5 recap: Jorge and Benny's story ends in tragedy

Josh was able to work his magic in Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 5 and Jorge was finally out of danger. However, his work is far from over as Benny has suffered a stroke and needs an immediate surgery.

While tensions were running high in the waiting room, Josh arrives with a bittersweet news. Jorge has pulled through but Benny was unresponsive and died during surgery. Wolf's interns are triggered by the news and Josh goes back into the OR to the scene which opened this episode. Wolf helps Josh clean up his medical equipment and the messy OR and comforts him.

As Josh is still questioning his skills as a surgeon, Anna sees him in the hallway and slaps him for Benny's death and curses him that he will never find peace. This could be a turning point for Josh, who is already doubting his skills and has not put his name on the board for an upcoming surgery.
