The end of Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s last season left its fans in 2021 in the midst of quirky workplace comedies with an unfilled gap. However, what broadband users are unaware of is that Steve Carell, widely known for his chaotic and lovable persona as Michael Scott in The Office, co-created a similar comedy that serves as a spiritual succor to Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

Angie Tribeca is a not-so-well-known show that serves the same tempo of humor, includes a police precinct setting, and also has The Office star making an appearance. Angie Tribeca, with a powerful rating of 96 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, might just be the undiscovered show for all the fans of Brooklyn Nine-Nine that were not previously known.

Angie Tribeca stars Rashida Jones, best known for playing Karen Filippelli in The Office, in the titular role. Co-created by Steve Carell and Nancy Carell, Angie Tribeca is a parody of absurd classic police series with the use of over-the-top absurdity and deadpan humor.

Angie Tribeca is known for the type of humor that approaches something headfirst instead of sidestepping surreal gags, nonsensical plotlines, and visual jokes, which, as a result, makes it unique and hilarious, unlike any other show out there. If Brooklyn Nine-Nine leaned into clever, character-driven humor, then the other may still use character humor, but in a different approach.

Angie Tribeca, which first aired in 2016 on TBS, showcases the LAPD detective Angie and her partner Jay Geils solving some outrageous cases. Contrary to Brooklyn Nine-Nine, which balances its comedy and character development and emotional beats, Angie Tribeca parodies everything about police procedural shows. From the unit’s name, Really Heinous Crimes Unit, to the absurd nature of their investigations, everything on the show is over-the-top.

Like in Brooklyn Nine-Nine, the core lap of humor in Angie Tribeca is anchored on witty dialogue; however, the former takes itself far less seriously, embracing a more Airplane! or The Naked Gun approach—all-out satire with non-stop jokes. Though the two shows differ significantly in their comedy anchors, their shared common absurdity, clever writing, and robust ensemble cast able to nail the punchline showcase ordinary DNA that binds them together.

What makes it a must-watch for fans of The Office and Brooklyn Nine-Nine?

If you enjoy The Office, you will appreciate the humor in Angie Tribeca. Rashida Jones brings her charm to East Coast Angie. Carell’s wife is also involved in the project, having played Katie. In keeping with the style of the Office, the Angie Tribeca humor is mostly deadpan and self-referential, which is also the style that brought The Office remarkable success.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine has its own set of loyal fans, including those who enjoy the more absurd plotlines centered around police work. The humor may be more surreal, but with a 96% score on Rotten Tomatoes, Angie Tribeca is definitely a comedy worth watching, not just for its parodic take on cop shows but for its craftsmanship as an original comedic work.

If you have been missing the chaotic energy of the Nine-Nine or the dorky absurdity of Dunder Mifflin, Carell’s Angie Tribeca will probably be the next best binge-watching candidate.
