NBC's workplace comedy, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, had some of the best heists, cold opens, and some dope high-stakes arrests. But sometimes, the highlight wasn't Gina's sassy comebacks, Peralta's chaotic energy, or even Captain Holt's stern brilliance—it was Cheddar. Yes! You heard that right—it was Cheddar Holt-Cozner, Captain Raymond Holt's beloved Pembroke Welsh Corgi.
Cheddar was not just Kevin and Holt's well-trained pet dog but also the floofiest, judgmental, and unofficial mascot of the 99th precinct. Remember when Cheddar was dognapped? Stolen by a perp, the squad launched a full-blown rescue because nobody messes with Holt!
Cheddar was played by two corgis: Stewart and his sister Stella. Stewart, who initially played Cheddar in Brooklyn Nine-Nine, unfortunately passed away in 2019 at the age of 13. In the later seasons, his sister Stella played Cheddar.
Here are five times when this regal furball won the spotlights and our hearts.
Top 5 Cheddar moments that stole the spotlight in Brooklyn Nine-Nine
5) The Great Escape - When Jake and Amy proved they should never be trusted with a Houseplant, let alone Cheddar

In Brooklyn Nine-Nine Season 3 Episode 18 'Cheddar,' when Holt decided to meet Kevin in Paris, Jake and Amy were given one job- watch Holt's house and, more importantly, look after Cheddar. The chaotic duo, along with Charles, tried to keep an eye on Cheddar. However, Amy's allergies and a small fire accident (Charles' pants were on fire, literally) caused immense chaos, leading to Holt postponing his flight. But most importantly, Cheddar escaped. Amy stormed into the room and announced that they mistakenly left the door open, and Cheddar escaped. Out of sheer panic, Jake screamed:
"What! We lost Cheddar. We're freaking out!"
Jake briefed the team before they set out to find Cheddar:
"The average footspeed of a corgi is ten miles per hour which means with every passing second that slippery bastard gets further away"
The squad's desperate search led them to Cheddar and Kevin's secret walk spot. And voila! They found Cheddar, the unbothered royal corgi, who was missing Kevin.
4) When Cheddar outsmarted the entire precinct
In Brooklyn Nine-Nine Season 4 Episode 5 'Halloween IV, Holt, being the tactical mastermind he is, trains Cheddar to be his heist accomplice and introduces him as 'cute little secret weapon:'
" Over the past month I've had him trained to retrieve plaques. Now boy, it's time to make daddy proud."
While the squad was busy double-crossing each other, Cheddar silently stole the NYPD plaques like a furry little spy. The best part? No one saw it coming.
It was at this moment that Cheddar proved he was not just Holt's pet but a key player in the 99th precinct.
3) The fake Cheddar debacle

In Brooklyn Nine-Nine Season 5 Episode 4, HalloVeen, Amy, the certified genius, pulled the most diabolical move in the show's history. She swapped Cheddar with another corgi to sabotage Holt's plans.
Holt was horrified at the moment when he realised his beloved Cheddar had been swapped. This led to one of the most iconic dialogues of the series. Holt's otherwise stern voice cracked as he said:
"You're not Cheddar. You're just some common b****"
The fact that Holt immediately recognised that it was not Cheddar proved how well he knew his pet. When Holt finally reunited with the OG Cheddar, a happy yet disappointed Holt told him:
" You betrayed me. You'll explain yourself later. Right into my office"
2) When Cheddar passed out after having Amy and Jake's wedding cake
During Amy and Jake's wedding, Cheddar had one job as a ring bearer- walk down the aisle like the dignified king that he is. Instead, he ate the entire Nakatomi Plaza wedding cake and passed out due to a sugar coma. Holt exclaimed when he found Cheddar lying on the precinct floor:
"Oh Cheddar! You furry little pig"
It was Jake and Amy's big day, but Cheddar still found a way to make it about him. Quite legendary and chaotic, isn't it?
1) When Cheddar was dognapped

In Brooklyn Nine-Nine Season 7 Episode 12 Ransom, when Frank Kingston kidnapped Cheddar, Holt panicked. Jake and Kevin teamed up to save him. But the real kicker? When he was finally rescued, an excited Holt screamed:
"Oh! It's our fluffy boy. Good Dog."
The scene proved one thing: Cheddar wasn't just a pet- he was family.
From outsmarting detectives to reuniting Kevin and Holt, Cheddar proved that he was the sassiest, spotlight-stealing character in Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
