Introduced first in Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 2, Jonathan initially was portrayed as a character who was extremely unpopular and devoid of friends at Sunnydale High. He is even shown to be bullied by the popular kids, which often made him exist only on the sidelines.

This however, changes in Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 3, when he tries to kill himself but is saved by Buffy. This naturally leads to a warm moment and Jonathan even presents Buffy the Class Protector Award.

While things seemed to be going fine with Jonathan since then, when he joined The Trio in season 6, which consisted of him along with Andrew and Warren, he went down a rather twisted path.

However, even before Jonathan became a part of The Trio, he had shown misogynistic tendencies, which were highlighted in Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 4.

In season 4 episode 6 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Jonathan is shown to be casting an augmentation spell with the desire of making the whole world think that he is the most handsome and cool guy ever. He also uses the spell to ensure that everyone likes him and he becomes popular in school.

However, before things get out of control, Buffy steps in and breaks the spell, which makes Jonathan go back to his own self. While he feels guilty of doing what he did, he gets freezed out by the Scooby Gang, the ones he had especially tried to impress. Everyone who had come into contact with Jonathan during his spell naturally feels violated and thus he gets even more lonelier.

The most shocking thing that Jonathan did while his spell was working was getting himself two bedmates whom he modelled upon attractive Swedish twins Ilsa and Inga. They were shown in their underwear in his mansion and by all means, it seemed that he was having sex with them.

The problematic part here is that these women could not have consented to a physical relationship with Jonathan as they were under the spell. He necessarily manipulated how they see him and then engaged in relationships with them, which is a serious violation of consent.

As Jonathan showed such abusive and misogynistic tendies towards women, it was only natural that these traits would increase once he joined The Trio. It took Katrina, Warren’s ex-girl friend to die, for Jonathan to finally realize that they have actually been raping women when they brought them under their spell and engaged in sexual activities with them.

After his realization, he does try to mend his ways and makeup for his past behaviors but what he did could never be balanced out with his subsequent attempts at redemption.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer can be streamed on Hulu.
