Conversations surrounding the reboot for Buffy the Vampire Slayer and which members of the cast will return have been going on for quite a while. Among other familiar names, this one character has been much talked about, on if she will be a part of the reboot. We're talking about Alyson Hannigan's character Willow Rosenberg.

Willow arrived in the pilot as a quiet, bookish girl who looked terrified of Cordelia Chase and everything that came with high school social politics. Watching her grow into her own power was one of the most rewarding storylines of the original series. Her transformation from timid student to one of the Scooby Gang’s strongest members was dramatic enough, but the narrative then pushed her into full villain territory as Dark Willow before bringing her back to the side of good in the final episode. By the end of the show, she had arguably surpassed Buffy in sheer magical ability.

If Willow becomes part of the revival, she cannot simply fall back into the role of Buffy’s helper. Their friendship can still matter, but Willow needs space to exist as a figure of authority and experience. Buffy’s return positions her as Nova’s mentor rather than the central hero. Willow could serve as a guiding force for a young witch, helping them navigate the temptations and dangers she once faced.

The show will feature Ryan Kiera Armstrong as Nova, who is the next chosen one stepping into Buffy's shadows. Faly Rakotohavana joins as Hugo, Ava Jean as Larkin, Sarah Bock plays Gracie, Di Tomasso portrays Abe, and Jack Cutmore Scott steps in as Mr. Burke.

The revival’s development dates back to early 2025, when fans got to know that Hulu was working on a sequel series set two decades later. Executive producers include Gellar herself, Zhao, the Zuckermans, Gail Berman from the Jackal Group, and the original series’ longtime shepherds Fran Rubel Kuzui and Kaz Kuzui. Dolly Parton also returns through Sandollar, just as she did when the series first aired between 1997 and 2003. The show is expected to premiere on Hulu in 2026.
