Butterfly is a spy thriller series that features Daniel Dae Kim, Piper Perabo, Reina Hardesty, and others. The show is created by Steph Cha and Ken Woodruff and is based on the Boom! Studios graphic novel series by Arash Amel.
The six-part series launched on Amazon Prime Video on August 13, 2025 and focuses on David Jung, played by Daniel Dae Kim, who is a former US intelligence operative. After David fakes his own death due to a turbulent past and begins to live in South Korea, his peaceful life soon turns upside down.
David’s past resurfaces when an agent of Caddis, David’s former organization, decides to track David. However, that agent is Rebecca, and she is the daughter of David. Butterfly therefore focuses not only on thrills and suspense, but also has a strong foundation in the father–daughter relationship.

Butterfly Episode 3: David’s plan to make his family escape

The third episode of Butterfly begins with David Jung on a train to Busan with his family. Rebecca learns that her father has a daughter with his second wife, Eunju Kim. As David tries to cover his injuries, he calls Yong Shik Choi, and the two speak in code about new passports for David and his family as they escape South Korea.
David wants his friend to quickly get the work done and they arrange a meeting for tomorrow. Rebecca questions the new members of the group and learns that Minhee, her half-sibling is seven years old. Rebecca confronts David about this big reveal and David accepts that he was afraid that she would reject him.
David assures her that things will be okay once they reach a safehouse which has ammunition and medicines. On the other hand, Juno’s intelligence network is hit when the commissioner of police cuts her camera feed. This leads to David having some time and they leave the train midway and take a bus. At the safehouse, Eunju tells David that his actions have threatened her and her daughter’s life and she sympathizes with Rebecca.

While Juno is questioned by Senator Dawson over the murder of a covert CIA asset called Jay Hun-lee and points to a picture of Hun-lee with Juno’s son, Oliver, Juno understands that her family is now a target. She warns Oliver to be more cautious but he tells Juno to prioritize David.
On the other hand, Gun finds Shik Choi and kills him when he does not give any information. However, Gun finds the passports of Rebecca and David and the note about Busan. He tells this to Juno who creates a task force with Oliver. Juno also tells Senator Dawson that Karpov’s murder was due to Rebecca.
When David realizes that Shik Choi is not in Busan, he is found by Gun, who follows David to his home. David and his family flee and take shelter in a fishing boat. As the Caddis agents come after him, he hides his wife and Minhee in a boat and he and Rebecca defeat the enemies.
Rebecca and David vanquish Gun and even Oliver is cornered. Oliver tells his mother’s secrets and it is revealed that Juno was the one who wanted to kill David, which forced David to take on a fake identity. David decides to capture Oliver and takes him on their journey to Fukuoka. Even Gun survives his injuries and wants revenge against David. Ultimately, David leaves his wife and younger daughter at his wife’s parents, while he and Rebecca carry on with their mission.
