By dropping the word "Green", I feel that HBO's Lanterns might be the gateway to the different color rings of the Green Lantern Lore

HBO's Lanterns is expected to release in early 2026 and features three human Green Lantern Corps members: Hal Jordan, John Stewart, and Guy Gardner. But ever since the series was announced in January 2023, fans have wondered why the makers chose to drop the word "Green".

Fans believe that this move was to assure them that the series would be better than the previous live-action adaptation. Naming the series Lanterns suggests that the upcoming show will be more grounded and realistic than the 2011 movie starring Ryan Reynolds. However, I believe that realism is not the only reason behind this change.

I think that Lanterns will set up the presence of the Lantern Corps of other colors, too:

While most of Lanterns will be a True Detective-style grounded murder mystery, I believe that the closing moments might set up the Corps of other colors, too. We already know that Danish actor Ulrich Thomsen is playing Sinestro in the series. In the comics, Thaal Sinestro is one of the respected Green Lanterns, who ruled over his home planet, Korugar, with an iron fist unbeknownst to other Green Lantern Corps members.

However, Hal Jordan, who was newly trained by Sinestro, revealed the latter's brutality to the Guardians of the Universe, resulting in Thaal's ouster. Bitter, Sinestro took the Yellow Lantern ring (which is powered by fear) and formed the Sinestro Corps. Considering Hal Jordan is already an experienced member in this series, the Yellow Lanterns may be a part of the series.

Actress Poorna Jagannathan teased the presence of the Yellow Lantern Corps/Sinestro Corps in the HBO series while promoting her then-upcoming comedy series, Deli Boys:

"I couldn't have loved the writing for Green Lantern more. Like Deli Boys, the Green Lantern series is extraordinarily well written and my character is extraordinarily well-built. And also, the way I can describe all the characters. We have all the characters we know and love... the Lanterns, the Guardians, Sinestros, and that world is still intact and everyone is presented as heroes and villains at the same time. And that's what makes the writing so complex, layered and so wonderful."

Therefore, it is possible that the HBO series might just introduce us to the Green and Yellow Lantern Corps and then slowly familiarize us with other Lantern Corps, too. Here are some of the different Lantern Corps in the comics that might be a part of the DCU:

What is the HBO series about?

As stated before, the HBO DC superhero show is poised to be a murder mystery in the style of True Detective, where most of the show takes place in a small American town. The official logline of the series reads:

"The series follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland."
