The upcoming Buffy reboot is set to feature a new slayer, who Sarah Michelle Gellar will likely mentor, as well as a new slayer played by Ryan Kiera Armstrong. However, there's one character from the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer show that fans are wondering if they're participating in the reboot. The character is none other than Cordelia Chase, played by actress Charisma Carpenter.

While it would be nice if Carpenter were to return in the Buffy reboot, it is imperative to note that Chase died in the fifth season of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer spin-off Angel. Thus, even if Carpenter were to return to the Buffy-verse, it might be as a ghostly apparition rather than one of the characters in the series. Plus, there is also Carpenter's own dark experiences in the show.

But now that Joss Whedon is not associated with the Buffy reboot, Carpenter might return as Cordelia.

Trigger Warning: This portion of the article mentions abusive behavior. Reader discretion is advised.

Joss Whedon's removal might ensure that Cordelia is given the respect she deserves in the Buffy reboot:

While the name Joss Whedon is infamous today, he was respected as a feminist icon in Hollywood two decades ago when Buffy was on air. But a lot of fans did notice the drop in quality of writing for the character of Cordelia in the later seasons of Angel. This, some people allege, was intentional, and that might probably be the case given Carpenter's allegations against Joss Whedon in February 2021.

In February 2021, Cordelia Chase actress Charisma Carpenter, supporting Justice League actor Ray Fisher, accused Joss Whedon of abusive behavior on the Buffy and Angel sets. One of the harrowing experiences that Carpenter described was when Joss Whedon pointedly asked her if she was going ahead with her pregnancy.

His behavior supposedly grew worse even after that, until her character was killed off in Angel season 5, episode 12.

Therefore, the new Buffy reboot has a chance to make it up to Carpenter for her past experiences, as it is confirmed that Whedon is not involved in this new series in any capacity.

What is the Buffy reboot about?

We don't know the story of the Buffy reboot as of now. But we do know that the reboot will follow a new slayer played by Ryan Kiera Armstrong, who played Fern in Star Wars: Skeleton Crew. Her casting was confirmed by Sarah Michelle Gellar herself by posting a clip of her offering Armstrong the role. The caption on the video read:

"I want to introduce you to @ryankarmstrong From the moment I saw Ryan’s audition, I knew there was only one girl that I wanted by my side. To have that kind of emotional intelligence, and talent, at such a young age is truly a gift. The bonus is that her smile lights up even the darkest room. Welcome to #NewSunnydale #btvs"

Siblings Lilla and Nora Zuckerman, who are involved in the reboot, released this statement:

“We are so overjoyed to have found this generation’s slayer in Ryan Kiera Armstrong, she absolutely blew us away — there is no question in our mind that she is the chosen one.”

As the show hasn't begun filming, and the casting process is underway, the Buffy reboot doesn't have a release date as of now.
