When Reacher Season 2 stormed back onto Prime Video, it wasn’t just Jack Reacher’s fists doing the talking — it was the crackling chemistry of his reunited 110th Special Investigations Unit that had fans hooked.

The lethal camaraderie between Reacher, O’Donnell, Dixon, and Neagley gave the season emotional depth beneath all the brutal takedowns. But now that Season 2 has wrapped, and Season 3 promises a whole new slate of characters, many viewers are wondering: Is there another show out there that can replicate that same gritty, battle-tested bond?

Enter Countdown, the high-octane crime thriller starring Jensen Ackles as a relentless federal agent caught in a web of deep-state secrets. The series has skyrocketed up Prime Video’s charts, and while Ackles’ solo performance is drawing deserved attention, there’s a growing curiosity about whether Countdown could become the next go-to action ensemble.

Ackles is no stranger to ensemble work. From Supernatural to The Boys, he knows how to play both leader and team player. So the real question is: Does the show offer the same compelling squad energy that made Reacher Season 2 so beloved? Let’s break it down.

Countdown has all the action — but is still finding its core squad

Countdown wastes no time in establishing high stakes and a morally murky world where everyone has secrets, and no one is safe. Ackles’ character, Agent Caleb Ward, is clearly set up as the kind of operative who’s burned through too many partners to count. But over the course of the season, a few recurring figures do emerge: a sharp-witted NSA analyst, a grizzled informant with unclear loyalties, and a local detective who's not buying Caleb's cowboy routine. It’s not a unit yet, more like puzzle pieces waiting click together.

That’s where it diverges from Reacher Season 2, which hit the ground running with pre-built chemistry. The 110th S.I.U. didn’t need time to grow on us, they already had history. In the show, the connections are still forming, which might frustrate fans who crave immediate squad synergy. The show so far relies more on atmosphere and intrigue than it does on team dynamics. That’s not a flaw, but a choice.

Jensen Ackles can anchor a team — but Countdown needs to let him

To its credit, the show is still in its early days, and its success on the streaming charts suggests that there’s plenty of appetite for more. If Amazon greenlights a second season, there’s a real opportunity here to flesh out the core cast and build stronger character interplay. Ackles has proven he can anchor a series, but for the show to truly rise, the showrunners need to give him co-stars who can challenge him, support him, and occasionally steal the spotlight.

With The Boys’ Vought Rising also on Ackles’ radar, there’s a chance he may not be available to film two full seasons simultaneously. But if the show continues to thrive and Ackles’ production deal with Amazon remains flexible, there's potential for the show to evolve into a true ensemble-driven franchise. The bones are there, now it all just needs connective tissue.
