Apple TV+'s The Morning Show Season 4 Episode 2 finally reintroduced two of the main characters who were largely absent from the latest season's premiere. While Alex (Jennifer Aniston) became the unsung hero and saved the UBA network with a merger in the Season 3 finale, this shake-up had drastic effects on Chip Black (Mark Duplass) and Cory Ellison (Billy Crudup).
Both Chip and Cory lost their respective jobs in Season 3 and went off to become movie producers. However, they were lured back to a changed UBN in The Morning Show Season 4 Episode 2 by Alex and Bradley (Reese Witherspoon).
Fans might recall that Chip will do anything in his power to reveal the truth to the world, which is why he joins hands with Bradley on her new story. Elsewhere, Cory also decides his fate for the upcoming season, and butt heads with the UBN's new CEO.
More on this in our story.
Chip Black is back in The Morning Show Season 4
Mark Duplass was absent from The Morning Show Season 4 premiere, but Chip Black finally returned to New York to help Bradley Jackson. While Chip's return was already written in the show's narrative, it is quite beautiful how he returns to help Bradley with her recent case. It shows how, like Bradley, Chip is also someone who cannot help it when an exciting story is out there.
Proving that old habits die hard, Chip returns and agrees to help Bradley with her case in The Morning Show Season 4. Since Bradley is after the Wolf River story and a huge cover-up at UBN (before Cory), Chip could not help it and arrived to chase this truth.
In an interview with Comic Book Resources, Duplass revealed the motivation behind his character's return:
''When Bradley Jackson offers this tiny little thread that looks like something suspicious at the network, he can't help but pull it a little bit. He can't help but bring himself back in.''
While he initially advises Bradley to leave the story and return to her life, the facade eventually comes off. Chip fans know that he will not rest until he knows the full truth, and that is exactly what he agrees to do, as Duplass further added:
''But at the end of the day, this guy believes in the news. He believes it's our job to reveal the truth, no matter what the cost is, and it always costs him dearly. That's part of what I love about him.''
Cory mimics Chip's story in The Morning Show Season 4
Like Chip, Cory also suffered a similar fate in the Season 3 finale, where he was forced to leave his position after the merger, and The Morning Show Season 4 premiere revealed that Stella became the new CEO of UBN. After Alex called Cory, he also returned to New York in Episode 2. While Cory had also taken a producer job in a feature film, it was not his calling.
Crudup reveals how Cory's story mimics Chip's in Season 4, and he returns to TMS the first chance he gets:
''Well, he, I think, internally completely believes that he will recover. And much like Chip, when he gets the first sign that somebody over at UBA or UBN might need him, he rushes to exploit that opportunity, because I think he wants to get back in there and prove that he does have the capacity to run the show there.''
The Morning Show Season 4 Episode 2 initiated another battle between Cory and Stella, where the latter refused to fund the former CEO's upcoming Oscar-baiting movie. Cory later hit the jackpot when he discovered that Stella was having an affair with Celine's boyfriend, and he will surely use this secret as leverage with the new CEO to get his old job back.
The Morning Show Season 4 airs weekly episodes every Wednesday on Apple TV+.
