Australian-born actor Finn Little joined Taylor Sheridan's Western Noir series Yellowstone in the Season 4 premiere as Carter and eventually became a series regular.

While Sheridan's flagship series ended with Season 5 in 2024, following Kevin Costner's controversial exit, the universe is ever-expanding with many confirmed spin-offs.

Among a plethora of spin-offs, Kayce's (Luke Grimes) Y: Marshals and Beth (Kelly Reilly) & Rip's (Cole Hauser) Dutton Ranch (working title) are two of the most anticipated spin-off shows, which are also direct sequels to the parent series.

While there have been plenty of updates about CBS' Y: Marshals, details about Beth and Rip's spin-off show have been mostly kept under wraps until a recent confirmation about Little reprising his character in the spin-off.

Finn Little played the role of Carter, Beth and Rip's surrogate son in Yellowstone and is now one of the confirmed cast members for Dutton Ranch.

More on this in our story.

Yellowstone: Is Finn Little returning as Carter in the Beth and Rip spin-off?

While there has not been much news about other cast members for the Beth and Rip spin-off, it was finally confirmed that Finn Little will reprise his Yellowstone character.

Fans were already speculating that Little's Carter will likely return in the upcoming spin-off and this confirmation comes as happy news for fans, as the character has much potential for the spin-off series. Since Sheridan is gradually moving towards the next generation in the universe, it would naturally make sense to bring Finn Little's character into the fold.

A chance meeting with Beth in the Season 4 premiere changed the direction of his life and he eventually became a Dutton. Carter first met Beth at the hospital, where his father was dying from drug addiction. While Beth initially hired Carter as help on the Yellowstone ranch, the young boy eventually developed a relationship with Beth and Rip.

Why is Finn Little's return to the Yellowstone universe important?

Since the Beth and Rip spin-off series will follow the next chapter of the couple's lives and the beginning of their new family, Finn Little's involvement with the project was necessary. In addition to Carter being an important (but underrated) character in Yellowstone, it's high time that he gets the spotlight in the upcoming spin-off.

In addition, Finn Little's return to the universe is also important for Beth to heal from her past traumas, especially the ones she suffered very early on in her life. The parent series finally revealed the reason behind Beth and Jamie's rivalry, where he forcefully sterilized his stepsister when she was young, robbing her of the joy of becoming a mother in adulthood.

While Beth finally avenged her step-brother for the wrongs he did to her in their youth, by killing him in the Yellowstone finale, this only gave her partial satisfaction. Since Beth always wanted to be a mother and have a family of her own, Carter's introduction into her life was the real healing for her character.

While Beth could still not have biological children of her own, Carter gave her the joys of motherhood she wanted and his involvement in the Beth-Rip spin-off suggests that the series will explore Beth's relationship with her surrogate son in more depth.

In addition, since Carter is the perfect John Dutton replacement in the universe, Finn Little's return suggests a much-needed generational shift in the Dutton family. Carter's relationship with Beth and Rip is also a reminder that not all familial ties need to be blood-related and that the family legacy can be continued even without the Dutton name.
