Daredevil: Born Again is back in the news, this time because we've learned what the original version of the Disney+ series was before it was retooled into its current releasable form. For the uninitiated, Born Again was officially announced in July 2022 at the San Diego Comic-Con. Back then, the show was supposed to consist of eighteen episodes.
However, Marvel Studios pulled the plug on that version of the series in the middle of the 2023 writers' strike and opted to retool the series. This new version of the show would consist of nine episodes instead of eighteen, and it is essential to note that the final form of the series retained some elements from the previous version of the series. For example, Daredevil: Born Again, Episode 5 was carried forward from the previous version of the show.
Now, Charlie Cox has further revealed that the original eighteen-episode version of Daredevil: Born Again would've originally featured characters that were variants rather than the Netflix versions. This is not surprising, as fans suspected so for a while before Marvel pulled the plug on the eighteen-episode series in September 2023.
Explaining Charlie Cox's recent Daredevil: Born Again comments:
Charlie Cox appeared on Deadline’s podcast, Crew Call, along with the showrunner Dario Scardapane. In this podcast appearance, Charlie Cox confirmed a long-standing theory that the original version of Daredevil: Born Again would have featured new versions of Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk (played by the same actors). The British actor's exact words were:
“One of the things the original team wanted to do was they wanted to keep Vincent [D’Onofrio] and I. They wanted to keep us, [but] they didn’t want to alienate the audience who hadn’t watched the [Netflix] show. They wanted it to kind of be a reset. So there was a conversation about it being almost like a variant. You know, in the Loki show, we talk about these variants. It was almost like it was a variant–and we never said that–but it was almost like a variant. So it was another version of these characters existing in this world.”
The actor, then, continued:
“That’s a valid choice, it’s a fun idea. The problem became that whenever I said something that was in contrast to what we’d shot in the past, people thought I was lying. They didn’t think I was a variant, they thought I was being disingenuous. It was a nice idea, it just didn’t pan out.”
Firstly, it needs to be acknowledged that Cox's quote is a bit confusing. It needs to be said that if the original version of Daredevil: Born Again was pitched with the idea that the show was not a continuation of the Netflix series, then nothing shot in the Disney+ series would've contradicted the Netflix series. But this confusing comment is indicative of the confusion fans felt before Born Again Season 1.
It wasn't until the Netflix shows were officially canonized into the MCU that the picture became a bit clearer. This is why it was a good decision on Marvel's part to pull the plug on the previously shot version of Daredevil: Born Again.
The entirety of Daredevil: Born Again Season 1 is available to stream on Disney+.
