Daredevil: Born Again Season 1 featured many iconic moments, but not every episode hits the bullseye (pun intended). After popular demand, the Disney+ series brought back Charlie Cox as the titular vigilante.
While Charlie was happy to reprise his role in the revival and loved the storyline, there was one particular episode that the actor did not quite enjoy. In an interview with The Playlist, Charlie revealed that he is not a fan of Daredevil: Born Again Season 1 Episode 5, "With Interest," in which a bank robbery takes place.
The actor mentioned that the episode was written before the show underwent a creative overhaul, but the makers chose to include it in the final draft. He even opposed it, feeling that a bank heist does not make sense in the year 2025. Although the episode has become quite popular with the audience, I agree with Charlie Cox that it was indeed one of the weakest points in the show.
I think Charlie Cox is right about Daredevil: Born Again Episode 5 being the weakest
During the interview, Charlie Cox said that many fans approach him to express how much they love the bank robbery episode in "Daredevil: Born Again," where Matt Murdock meets Kamala Khan's father, Yusuf Khan.
The actor disclosed that the episode's script was a part of the show's original draft, where Foggy was supposed to be killed off-screen. Although the script was eventually changed, the heist episode remained as it is, against the wishes of Charlie, who only filmed it 'for the money':
“We shot that before the strike. That was part of the original, and just for my money, I wasn’t into it.”
Talking about why he does not like the episode, the actor said:
“That feels like a 1970s game. Too much technology these days for that to work. And also, I didn’t think the actual device used for the theft was sophisticated enough. I really pushed back on the episode, and yet I hear from so many people that they love that episode.”
I completely understand Charlie's point; the episode does feel old-fashioned, unrealistic, and doesn't really fit the show's style. Daredevil: Born Again is meant to be serious and gritty, but this particular episode feels forced and somewhat contrived.
Firstly, banks today are protected by advanced digital security, facial recognition, and constant surveillance, making physical robbery unreasonable. It stretches the believability too far, especially in a show like Daredevil, which typically aims to keep things grounded.
Another issue is that the robbery itself is not clever or high-tech enough to be interesting. The episode does not provide us with a brilliant plan or a surprising twist; it merely follows a basic setup that has been done a hundred times.
The crime has no emotional weight, and the villain doesn't feel like a real threat. This makes the stakes feel low and the story forgettable. Additionally, the setting in a bank feels oddly out of place. Daredevil usually shines in dark alleyways, courtrooms, or personal showdowns, rather than in bright, corporate spaces.
Daredevil: Born Again Episode 5 feels like filler, as it does not meaningfully build character. It fails to develop Matt's story or reveal his struggles, and it seems to feature a side story that could easily be omitted without any impact.
For a show like Daredevil: Born Again, which is known for great writing and powerful scenes, With Interest is a significant step down, and therefore, I believe Charlie Cox's reasons for not liking the episode are completely valid.
