Adela Mou joined the latest season of The Great American Baking Show. She hails from Brooklyn and grew up in a Chinese immigrant family. She has made her way to the finale, clearing all the challenges of the various weeks. Judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith are also in awe of her work.
However, discussing her time on the show, Adela said it was both challenging and heartwarming. The best part for her was the friendships formed with other bakers as they navigated the challenges together week after week. Talking about the same, she told the Brooklyn Paper:
"The best part of the experience happened in the tent in July — being there, meeting the other bakers, and making friends. I feel like I’ll have those memories for the rest of my life. The show is just the cherry on top.”
Adding about her family's reaction to her being on The Great American Baking Show, she revealed:
"My friends and family are very proud. They think it’s really cool to see someone they know on TV, especially since I don’t typically make elaborate desserts like pie towers or bread sculptures at home. Seeing what I can do on the show has been a surprise for them.”
The Great American Baking Show star Adela Mou and her journey
Adela is back home right now as The Great American Baking Show has ended. She is working as a baker in the community and has recently hosted a tasting event in Manhattan.
Talking about her past, she said that baking was not something common that one would find in a household like hers, which has its roots in China. However, it all started when she took a job at the Cold Stone Creamery.
This would prompt her to make cakes from box mixes and decorate them. Even though it was not traditional baking, this developed her interest in the sector and became a career later in life.
Adela said that she would bake cake for her friends in college and learn about new flavors, especially from Asia, which represented her ethnicity. What started her professional journey was the original, The Great British Bake Off Show, which she used to watch and learn from. Adela expressed:
"The Great British Bake Off really helped me improve. Seeing amateurs do these challenging bakes made me realize I had the tools and desire to try. I started experimenting with international flavors like Kalamansi and fish sauce, blending Asian ingredients with American desserts. I wanted to highlight those flavors because they’re so common in many parts of the world but less known here.”
These Asian flavors were used by Adela during the time she was on The Great American Baking Show. The only issues she faced were the architectural aspect of her desserts or cakes.
The baker explained that it is not her best suit as she is not strong when it comes to constructing things that require balance.
The Great American Baking Show can be streamed online with the Roku Channel app.
