Chicago P.D. Season 12 has aired its penultimate episode, Open Casket. Throughout the season, Deputy Chief Reid got into loggerheads with Hank Voight, hinting that he was hiding something.
His mask is finally off, as Voight has discovered that he was only pretending to be a nice guy. In reality, he is a villain behind the badge. The new episode builds up the tension before the finale, as Voight and his Intelligence Unit go all in trying to take down Reid.
However, things do not go as planned, and the team ends up paying a heavy price. Here is the complete Chicago P.D. Season 12 Episode 21 recap.
Chicago P.D. Season 12 Episode 21 recap: Voight tries to take down Deputy Chief Reid
Voight knows that Deputy Chief Reid is a corrupt man. With help from Assistant State’s Attorney Nina Chapman, he tries to gather enough evidence to bring him down.
Reid has been secretly helping drug dealer Jesus Otero grow his business, thinking it would lower crime. In reality, Reid is getting a cut of the money and wants to control everyone — from drug lords to the IU.
He has been using the police to crush Otero’s rivals. To keep up appearances, Voight tells Reid he has a lead on a new case, but he is actually trying to trap him. The IU hides cameras at a funeral home where Otero runs his drug business in order to catch him in the act, and force him to turn on Reid.
Chicago P.D. Season 12 Episode 21 recap: Otero’s son ruins the plan
Just as things seem to be going smoothly, Otero’s son, Rennie, messes everything up. Rennie, who just turned 18, steals a stash of heroin from his dad. Otero had tried to keep him away from crime, but Rennie wanted to make a name for himself and started selling the drugs in a different part of the city.
Detective Adam Ruzek pretends to be a buyer and catches Rennie red-handed. When the team goes in to arrest him, Rennie tries to flee and ends up hurting his leg. Instead of taking him to jail, Voight keeps him in a safehouse. He then offers Otero a deal: help bring down Reid, and Rennie won’t have to face a possible 30-year prison sentence.
Otero agrees as he is desperate to save his son. He knows Reid will never stop controlling him and sees Voight as his only chance for freedom. To sell the setup, Voight and the IU fake a robbery at Otero’s drug operation and steal $750,000.
Chicago P.D. Season 12 Episode 21 recap: Reid hits back hard
Reid figures out the trap before it can work. One of Otero’s own men betrays him and tells Reid about the robbery. The Deputy Chief responds by kidnapping Otero. Even though he does not kill him right away, the IU knows time is running out.
Eventually, they find Otero’s body, realizing Reid got what he needed from him. Reid then hits back at Voight’s team by launching an internal investigation. He uses their past mistakes and secrets to take them down.
Dante Torres gets arrested for misconduct, and Kim Burgess gets fired. At the end of Chicago P.D. Season 12 Episode 21, Reid shuts down the entire IU, and since he is in charge of the review, he controls what happens next.
