The iconic murder mystery game Clue is coming to television, and it could not be better!
Originally released in the 1940s (as Cluedo), Clue has since been one of the most successful board games, with more than 150 million copies being sold across the globe. Sony Pictures Television and Hasbro Entertainment are now collaborating to make it a scripted TV series.
It will be a one-hour mystery drama, although the plot details remain confidential. What we do know is that it is being developed this fall for TV networks and streaming sites. The creative team comprises Dana Fox, the writer-producer of the Wicked film, and Nick Stoller, the director of the Muppets movies and Friends from College.
And that is not all; Netflix is also developing a competition series based on Clue. In that show, participants will play the role of the traditional suspects, such as Colonel Mustard, Miss Scarlett, and others, to solve the mystery by undergoing both mental and physical challenges.
It appears that Clue fans have been given a twofold treat; both those fond of the story and those fond of the game will be satisfied.
Clue: A classic mystery reimagined
Even in the modern world of streaming, Clue retains its ageless mystery charm. The new television series will be an hour-long murder mystery based on the ancient board game: a crime in a large mansion with many eccentric suspects.
Up till now, few details have been divulged. What is known is that Sony Pictures Television is collaborating with Hasbro to get the show going. It also has the directing hand of Nick Stoller, who has just renewed his agreement with Sony, which translates to good studio backing.
The storyline remains unknown (and fittingly so), but it might focus on a contemporary reinterpretation of Boddy Manor, or the well-known characters could be reimagined in different ways. Regardless of which path it follows, the series is bound to ensure that Clue continues to maintain its trademark combination of suspense, humor, and nostalgia.
The creative team behind Clue

The creators of the new Clue TV series are an intriguing combination of talent. Dana Fox, co-writer of the Wicked movies and the mystery show Home Before Dark on Apple TV+, is famous for big, dramatic characters and twists in the plot. With her on board, Clue would be a good blend of mystery, drama, and a taste of theatrical flair.
She is accompanied by Nicholas Stoller, the director and scriptwriter of comedies like Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Neighbors. Stoller is also the co-writer of the screenplays of The Muppets and is the co-creator of Friends From College on Netflix. He is really humorous and timely, especially when handling large casts.
Fox and Stoller should be an excellent team in making Clue smart and funny. Although character information is yet to be disclosed, the fans should look forward to a new, whimsical approach to a traditional murder mystery, containing secrets, humor, and mayhem in true Clue style.
Clue gets competitive on Netflix

Love the mystery of Clue? There is more fun coming your way! Netflix has also announced a new unscripted competition show, which is based on the classic board game. VP of Netflix’s Unscripted Series, Jeff Gaspin, said:
“Like so many families and friends over the years, we’ve gathered around the table trying to figure out who did it—making Clue a source of nostalgia that everyone shares. Thanks to the incredible vision of our partners at Hasbro Entertainment, IPC, and B17, we’re delivering a fresh, imaginative whodunit competition that will invite today’s audiences into that iconic world.”
In this adaptation, the actual participants will fill the roles of well-known characters like Miss Scarlet, Professor Plum, Colonel Mustard, and others. They will participate in physical and mental activities, seeking hints and solving the mystery. Following every round, players are required to guess who, where, and with what it was done, similar to the original game. A right guess puts dollars in the pot, whereas a wrong guess might lead to being eliminated.
No date has been announced yet, and with this and the upcoming scripted Clue drama, the fans will be getting a two-for-one deal. Whether you like watching mysteries or solving them on your own, there’s a Clue for everyone!
