It’s not every day that a crime thriller breaks new ground while staying true to the genre’s pulse-pounding roots. But Code of Silence, the upcoming BritBox Original, is doing exactly that—inviting audiences into a world of secrets, surveillance, and one extraordinary woman at the center of it all. And no, she’s not your usual hard-boiled detective.

Premiering July 24 in the US and Canada with a two-episode launch, this six-part drama unfolds through the eyes of Alison Brooks, a Deaf woman whose ability to lip-read lands her in the heart of a high-risk police sting operation. But this isn’t just about catching bad guys—it's also about identity, agency, and the deafening pressure of living a double life.

Crafted with an eye for authenticity and suspense, Code of Silence is streaming exclusively on BritBox, with new episodes dropping every Thursday until the finale on August 21. In a welcome move, the entire series will also be available with American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation, reflecting the inclusive spirit of the show.

At the core of Code of Silence is Alison Brooks—played by Rose Ayling-Ellis, who’s fast becoming one of the UK’s most compelling screen talents. Alison juggles two jobs and looks after her Deaf mum, Julie (Fifi Garfield), while barely scraping by. Then DS Ashleigh Francis (Charlotte Ritchie) ropes her into an undercover mission, asking her to decode dangerous conversations from a gang the police can’t touch by conventional means.

Alison’s skill quickly proves invaluable—but what starts as an assist to law enforcement spirals into a personal crucible. Her connection to one of the suspects, Liam Barlow (Kieron Moore), turns from cautious observation to something far messier. With lives on the line and her own secrets mounting, Alison’s quiet world is anything but silent.

A cast packed with familiar faces and fresh intensity

The supporting ensemble is stacked with both prestige and punch. Charlotte Ritchie (You, Ghosts) brings grit and nuance as the detective guiding Alison, while Andrew Buchan (Broadchurch) and Andrew Scarborough (Emmerdale) bring seasoned tension to the police team. Joe Absolom (Doc Martin), Beth Goddard (The Serpent Queen), and Nathan Armarkwei Laryea (The Witcher) round out a cast that elevates the stakes at every turn.

Behind the camera, Code of Silence benefits from the direction of Diarmuid Goggins (Kin) and Chanya Button (Doctor Who), who together create a world that feels immediate, intense, and wholly lived in. Created by Catherine Moulton—who drew on her own experience with hearing loss—the show is backed by Mammoth Screen and executive produced by Ayling-Ellis herself. It’s not just smart crime TV—it’s personal.
