Colman Domingo, the reserved, intelligent, and tolerant Ali, from Euphoria, has been dropping some intriguing hints on why Euphoria Season 3 will be much different than the first two seasons. In a recent interview with MTV UK, he appears to be really happy as he talks about the new season. It is not merely about reconnecting with the former cast members, he insists that the Euphoria Season 3 will be much deeper on an emotional level.

Fans have been sharing their own thoughts on the videos where Domingo discusses the idea of “faith” and “belonging” and how it will focus on something more complex and more existential rather than high school drama.

You may also experience how the sad reality, and particularly, the loss of his co-star Angus Cloud (both on and off-screen) has altered the color of the story. Euphoria Season 3 appears to be heading towards more convoluted and serious matters, influenced by the similarity of the characters’ journeys and the actual experiences of the cast.

What according to Colman Domingo Euphoria Season 3 is about

A more drastic shift Colman Domingo foreshadows in Euphoria Season 3 is an increased emphasis on faith. But it is not about religion as such, it is more about broken individuals seeking something to hold onto. Domingo describes it in a wonderful way, coupling it with the themes of addiction and substance abuse, and says that as the world turns dark, the things that people hold dear are not necessarily rational and right. They are personal, emotional, and even messy, and yet they keep you going.

In the conversation with MTV UK, Colman Domingo stated:

“I think that you will not be mentally prepared for Season 3 because it's taking so long for us to give you a Season 3. We want to make sure that we're gonna knock your socks off. But what's cool about it is that I think it's a bigger examination. It's less just about addiction or these wild and out teenagers. It really is about faith. And so I feel that's the one thing I feel I've been able to articulate and say that I know that's what Sam’s very interested in, about what do we have faith in? And sometimes I think it gets lost when it comes to addiction and all that stuff, but ultimately what people are searching for is belonging and faith, a belief in something…”

It is a massive departure from the second and third seasons. Euphoria has already demonstrated some elements of spirituality in the past, particularly in Ali’s recovery, but it has never been the main focus of the show. At this point, Domingo mentions that hope and faith will serve as a significant factor particularly to characters who are stumbling and seeking purpose following their errors.

This change is even more fundamental to Ali himself. He is still assisting Rue (Zendaya) with her recovery, but he is also grappling with questions of his own: what he has made peace with, what still hurts and what he believes he deserves in life. Belief, in this context, is not presented as a simple solution, on the contrary, it is a very thin, beautiful rope that you cling on to when everything else becomes too heavy.

Ali’s character arc in Euphoria Season 3

In Euphoria Season 3, Ali (Colman Domingo) is not only Rue’s wise sponsor anymore, but he has a story of his own. Euphoria Season 3 is set to reveal new dimensions to Ali’s character: what he once was, what his life is, and what actually makes him the person he is.

Rather than a mentor only, Ali will be allowed to share more of his personal world, dating life, his occupation and even bits of his background. It is thrilling since Ali has always been a peace-loving and reflective character, and this time around, we will have the chance to peek into what transpires behind in his life and mind.

The best thing about his relationship with Rue is that they are the same as before: they get back to their mentor-mentee (almost big brother-little sister) dynamic. However, in Euphoria Season 3 Ali will not only be assisting Rue to grow; he is also on his own emotional and spiritual path.
