Zoe Perry has made the character of Mary Cooper immortal with her iconic performance in Young Sheldon. As the devoted and protective mother of the lead, the actress established a special connection with the audience.

As the show delved into the young protégé’s childhood days, the storyline focused on his family members, one of them being Mary. However, while the character was loved by the audience, Zoe Perry revealed that there was one aspect of Mary that she did not like.

In a 2019 interview with Mashable, the actress was asked what her least favorite thing about her character was, to which she replied she does not like how rigid Mary is:

“Least favourite is probably her rigidity, because it is not only metaphorical but literal! I find that I am constantly tense when I am playing her. So at the end of the day, I’m a little sore!”

In the same interview, Zoe Perry was also asked about her favorite thing about her Young Sheldon character. The actress stated she liked how passionate the mother of three is and how she genuinely cared about things:

“I like how passionate Mary is. She really cares about what she cares about and she’ll let you know!”

Zoe also opened up about her on-set experiences, revealing if the child actors ever asked for acting advice. She said while she does not need to help the kids with performances, she does act like a parental figure to them on the set:

‘I don’t think they need our help when it comes to that. But by virtue of them being kids, we do kind of stand in as parental figures when we’re on set. So, it definitely helps create that family dynamic.”

Further talking about the experience of working with the lead, Iain Armitage, Zoe recalled an episode where the child actor memorized an entire monologue in five minutes, proving how talented he is:

“I remember we had an episode in Season 1 and because it was new for us all, it just so happened that our running time was short. So they had to add a scene, and the writers came up with a brilliant monologue for Iain to do; it was shot next week.”
‘And Iain memorized it in literally five minutes! I don’t know how he did it! That kind of stuff just boggles my mind. He has to rattle off really difficult scientific jargon and sometimes it might stump him, but rarely. But even when it does, we just tell him, “Hey, you’re doing so much better than we ever would!”

Interestingly, in The Big Bang Theory, the older version of Mary Cooper was portrayed by Zoe’s real-life mother, Laurie Metcalf. Apart from Young Sheldon, the actress has also been seen in the shows Scandal, NCIS, Conviction, My Boys, and Grey's Anatomy. In 2019, she earned a Critics' Choice Television Award nomination for her role as Mary Cooper.

All seasons of Young Sheldon are available to stream on Max.
