Almost a year after NBC canceled Quantum Leap, a revival of the hit 1989 sci-fi show, Netflix has finally released both its seasons on its platform. While the revival show was canceled after two seasons, its Netflix release is expected to introduce it to a wider and newer audience.
Starring Raymond Lee, Caitlin Bassett, and Ernie Hudson in lead roles, Quantum Leap was set thirty years after the original show. The series followed Dr. Ben Song (Lee), the new physicist of the titular project and Dr. Sam Beckett's successor, who uploads a new program code to leap back in time.
While NBC canceled the show in April 2024, Netflix's interest might materialize into Quantum Leap Season 3, especially after that (still unsolved) Season 2 cliffhanger.
More on this in our story.
Is Quantum Leap Season 3 possible after the show's recent Netflix debut?
While the Quantum Leap revival was shockingly canceled just after two seasons on NBC, its recent Netflix debut unlocked a new milestone for the show. Since Netflix is the leading streaming juggernaut and home to similar sci-fi shows like Stranger Things, Dark, Travelers, and Lost in Space, the 2022 NBC series could likely find a new audience on the platform.
It is clear that the revival series was canceled because it failed to compete with other NBC shows, as Jeff Bader, an executive at NBC Universal Entertainment, revealed to TV Line:
"'Organized Crime' is a VERY successful show...It’s a show that works across the board, and it’s very, very strong on streaming...[It's a] different discussion with [Quantum Leap], which was just a much softer show, performance-wise."
While Quantum Leap's cast and crew argued that a sci-fi show with this calibre takes some seasons to establish its plot and characters and form a connection with the audience, NBC pulled the plug too soon. However, its recent Netflix debut has filled its audience with a renewed sense of hope for the franchise, as a Reddit user wrote:
''I'm not very optimistic about the chance of a revival but doing good numbers will at least be useful for potential other revivals for the franchise in the future. And hopefully some new fans will give the show a chance as I think it's a worthy follow-up to the original series.''
What would Quantum Leap Season 3 have looked like?
The two-hour Season 2 finale saw Hannah finally finding a code that would bring Ben back to his time, but someone would need to take his place. Addison, Ben's girlfriend, volunteers to take his place. However, while Addison is sent back in time, the code fails to bring Ben back home, and the series finale ends with the couple stranded in time together.
Since the creators were hopeful after an early Season 2 renewal, they had huge plans for Quantum Leap Season 3, which was supposed to be a 'launchpad' for Ben and Addison's journey and their new (and changed) dynamics.
Talking about the plans for season 3, executive producer Dean Georgaris said in an interview with TV Line:
''We’ve spent two seasons building up two great leapers and a supporting cast that now may or may not have a code that may or may not work again to pull people out, and it really becomes about what can we affirmatively do with this new dynamic. We spent two seasons building up a launchpad to a whole new journey."
After spending the majority of two seasons figuring out the code, the creators were planning to move to a new chapter, but the show was axed too soon. The cancellation was even more disappointing because the show's world is still brimming with possibilities about Ben and Addison's future.
