While the debut season of Wednesday proved to be a raging success on Netflix, fans expect the upcoming sophomore season to perform better. As per recent reports, the second season will be comparatively darker in terms of tone and will once again feature Jenna Ortega's Wednesday Addams unearthing another mystery.
While the cast composition of the Addams Family spinoff is being hotly discussed presently, it has now been confirmed that Joana Lumley will portray the role of Hester Frump, or Wednesday Adams's grandmother, and one of her closest companions. Here's everything that we know.
Creators open up about Joana Lumley's role on Season 2
Wednesday creators and showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar recently shared several details about the upcoming second season with Good Housekeeping:
"Wednesday’s journey is darker and more complex as she navigates family, friends, new mysteries, and old adversaries, propelling her headlong into another year at Nevermore."
They also expressed their delight at Lumley's performance:
"The idea of bringing Hester, Morticia’s mother, into the fold this season was something we were so excited about. The first day on set when Joanna walked on, she just was Hester, and she nailed every single line, and it’s just so delicious. She’s perfect and hilarious. That Wednesday-Hester relationship is unique; you see a twinkle in both their eyes when they’re together on-screen. I think everyone is going to fall in love with Hester."
Lumley has commented:
"I get to wear many, many huge wigs, one on top of the other — and lots of quite constraining clothes, so I love it."
What's the latest buzz about Season 2?
While the debut season of the Netflix show focused mostly on the titular character played by Jenna Ortega, the second season is being speculated to include quite a few characters from the original Addams Family, making the show's second outing more wholesome. Luis Guzman, who plays Gomez Addams, recently revealed:
"They went not into a different orbit or universe – they went into a different galaxy. You know what I'm saying? I tipped my hat to these guys, man, because they create a vision."
The official synopsis for the second season reads:
"Armed with her signature razor-sharp wit and deadpan charm, Wednesday is also plunged into a new bone-chilling supernatural mystery."
Jenna Ortega speaks about Wednesday Season 2
Ortega herself dropped details about the structure and narrative of the upcoming season while speaking in an interview with Vanity Fair magazine. Apart from revealing that the sophomore season might be high on the element of horror, she also added that the narrative would be a bit more "episodic":
"We’re definitely expanding on the supernatural world, Our show had all sorts of werewolves and vampires… and I think we expand on that a little bit. Every episode (of Season 2) that I’ve read so far is like that. It just stands out on its own as a very memorable scene or bit or setting, which I think is what I’m most excited for, because to pull that off for eight episodes is, I think, really incredible and really lucky."
The previous episodes of the show are exclusively available on Netflix.
