Creature Commandos star Frank Grillo has confirmed that Rick Flag Sr.’s signature silver look will be coming soon in the DCU. Frank Grillo, who voices Rick Flag Sr. in the series and plays him in live-action, said that his character will have the white hair and white beard fans know from the animated series in future DCU appearances.
This news comes after fans noticed a difference in Grillo’s appearance in Superman, where Rick Flag Sr. had black hair instead of white. According to Collider, Frank Grillo explained that the change was due to filming schedules. Rick Flag Sr.’s look in Commandos became popular with fans, and many expected it to continue in Superman. Grillo has now said the silver look will return.
Fans will see the next version of Rick Flag Sr. in Peacemaker Season 2, which will be released soon in the DCU timeline. This update connects Creature Commandos, Superman, and Peacemaker through Grillo’s version of Rick Flag Sr.
Why Rick Flag Sr. looked different in Superman
In Creature Commandos, Frank Grillo’s Rick Flag Sr. has a white beard and white hair. This “silver look” became a key part of the character’s identity in the DCU. However, when Grillo appeared in Superman, his hair and beard were black. This caused questions among DCU fans who followed Creature Commandos.
Frank Grillo explained the reason in a panel at the Atlanta Comic Convention, according to Collider. He said,
“I was on another show, Tulsa King, and it was literally back-to-back, and during, and so I couldn't… And people really were not happy about it. They were really mean about my dark hair.”
Grillo had to keep his hair dark because of his role in Tulsa King. Filming Superman and Tulsa King at the same time made it impossible for Grillo to match Rick Flag Sr.’s silver look from the Creature Commandos. This created a difference in his live-action appearance in Superman.
Fans reacted to this change on social media. Grillo acknowledged the reaction and said the DCU team listened to fans who wanted consistency with Rick Flag Sr.’s silver look from Commandos.
The silver look will return in Peacemaker Season 2
Frank Grillo said fans will see Rick Flag Sr.’s silver look again in the DCU. According to Collider, Grillo stated,
“We're showing Peacemaker next week at Comic-Con in San Diego, so I'm gonna try to dye my hair for that. But, you know, hopefully next season I'll be able to do it.”
Grillo explained that Peacemaker Season 2 will include new footage shown at Comic-Con and will be released on August 21. Rick Flag Sr. is a main character in Peacemaker Season 2, where he will confront Peacemaker after the events of The Suicide Squad.
Grillo also told IGN,
“I think the next time, if they don't fire me, the next time I'm in something, it's white hair.”
What’s next for Creature Commandos star Frank Grillo in the DCU?
Frank Grillo is set to appear in more DCU projects. His next appearance is in Peacemaker Season 2, where Rick Flag Sr. will be one of the main antagonists. Peacemaker Season 2 follows Rick seeking revenge against Peacemaker for the death of his son, Rick Flag Jr., in The Suicide Squad.
Frank Grillo has also played comic book characters before. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Grillo appeared as Crossbones in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, and Avengers: Endgame. Grillo now focuses on the DCU, appearing in Creature Commandos, Superman, and Peacemaker.
According to Collider, the DCU is building long-term plans for his character, Rick Flag Sr., after Creature Commandos.
