In the penultimate episode of Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 3, we saw how the Disciples' twisted plan began closing in on the BAU, pushing the team to the edge.
Here's what we know about the finale episode of Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 3.
Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 3 ending explained: The truth about Tessa, aka the Disciple
The finale episode begins with a flashback where we see Cyrus cross paths with a young woman called Constance in a bar. Soon, Cyrus starts a conversation with her and learns that Constance is a mechanical engineering PhD student who was quite disturbed after being se*ually exploited by a professor. Cyrus banks on her emotions and soon becomes a friend, only to kidnap Constance from the parking lot.
The revelation?
Constance, also called Tessa Lebrun, is the Disciple and the follower of the Sicarius Network. We learn that Tessa was groomed by Cyrus to be Elias Voit's twisted successor. Her obsession with Sicarius fuels her sadistic campaign to resurrect Voit's killer persona.
As the BAU investigates the hospital massacre and the disappearance of Dr. Julia Ochoa and Voit, they find out that the doctor's computer has been hacked by Tessa to get hold of Voit's notes.
Why did the Disciple kidnap Voit and Dr. Julia?
The penultimate episode of Criminal Minds Season 18 ended with a 'To Be Continued' mark, as someone entered Voit's room in the hospital premises. The hijacker entered Voit's room, turned the lights off, and pulled a gun on him. This left the viewers in utter confusion, leaving Voit's fate hanging by a thread.
In the finale episode, we saw how Tessa, aka the Disciple, held Dr. Julia and Voit hostage in an abandoned plant.
Tessa kidnapped Voit for igniting his killer persona, which has been subdued due to years in jail and recovery. Tesse grows desperate and forces Voit to kill the doctor. But Voit instead kills Tesse's ally Perry to protect the doctor. Nevertheless, this deadly avatar of Voit makes Tessa quite content. After Voit kills Perry, Tessa reinserts him into the team and even trusts him with a gun. He fakes shooting the doctor to gain Tessa's trust.
Voit then does the unimaginable- he sends a code to the Sicarius Network that gives them location updates of its members. Voit knew that Gracia would crack it and inform the BAU about it. Thus, he secretly revealed Tessa's location to the BAU. A brilliant move, indeed.
BAU vs Tessa- Who wins the finale showdown?
When BAU reaches the isolated location, they meet Julia, who tells Rossi that Voit saved her. During the final confrontation between BAU, Voit, and Tessa, Voit finally pulls a gun on Tessa. However, Tessa escapes the spot before JJ and Tyler reach. Voit reaches a melting point when he asks JJ to shoot him, but JJ does not pull the trigger. JJ understands that Voit is a changed man now that he has given up violence.
Elsewhere, we see a brief standoff between Prentiss and Tessa where Prentiss shares that Tessa's life should have been better than what it has turned out to be. Tessa finally thinks of dying by suicide, but before she could take the next step, BAU agents intervene.
What's next for Voit and the BAU in Criminal Minds: Evolution?
The episode ends with Julia thanking Voit for saving her life, while Voit apologizes for putting her life at risk. Voit then confesses his crimes to Rossi, and the finale ends with Voit being transported to a maximum-security prison in a prison bus. On the other hand, the BAU celebrates their wins for taking down the notorious network. However, like any crime thriller, Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 3 ends on a cliffhanger where we see Voit having a dream about killing an inmate on the bus. Whether Voit is fully reformed or just playing the long game, one thing is clear- the BAU hasn't seen the last of him.
