Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 is coming and fans are already counting the days. Season 1 gave us a Daredevil who was torn and broken. We were introduced to a hero who hung up his suit for a while before realizing that walking away isn't really an option. Especially when Hell’s Kitchen is still tainted by corruption.
Fisk is now even more powerful as the new mayor of New York City. He has even formed an anti-vigilante task force that has all the bad apples of the police force. The Punisher dropped in too when Daredevil needed help. He fought alongside his old mate "Red" before walking into the lion's den and getting captured by Fisk's men.
Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 promises to be an exciting watch with a lot to reveal. But what really has us hyped is what Charlie Cox himself just teased. He says this upcoming season contains some of the best writing the show has ever seen.
Charlie opened up about what makes Marvel tick and why he’s so excited about this next chapter in a recent interview with The Playlist. Let’s get right into it.
Daredevil: Born Again - The devil returns
The previous season of Daredevil: Born Again ended with a serious bang. We had the anti-vigilante task force hunting down the street heroes. The Punisher was caged after he went 'one man army' mode on them. But Frank Castle isn't one to stay locked up for long.
Daredevil is still flying under the radar but he’s torn. He is trying to figure out how to save the ones that Fisk has locked away. And then there’s Bullseye who is lurking somewhere in the shadows. Nobody knows what's going to happen next. And that's the charm of Daredevil: Born Again.
Charlie Cox is already teasing that Season 2 is shaping up to be next level. He said:
“I don’t want to oversell it. I do happen to think it’s some of the best writing we’ve ever had on this show. I am sure everyone always says that. I texted the showrunner, Dario, the other day and was like, ‘Obviously we’re still halfway through shooting it, but huge, huge credit to what you’ve pieced together here.’ He’s done something which I’m really excited about, which is that he’s fleshed out characters that in the previous iteration of the show often get left behind. So, it feels much more like an ensemble than it’s ever felt.”
This shift allows Matt Murdock’s journey to be more layered. He operates like a ghost instead of being front and center in every scene. He is more mysterious and unpredictable. Cox believes that makes the story even more compelling.
Daredevil: Born Again - Cox shares why he thinks Marvel is successful
It’s wild to think that Daredevil: Born Again almost went down a completely different path. The 2023 WGA and SAG strikes unexpectedly became a turning point for the show. The original version was already shot but that break gave everyone a moment to think and reflect. They realized that something wasn’t quite clicking.
And it was during that time that the creative team decided to return to the darker and grittier vibe that made the original Netflix show such a fan favorite. That's also when Dario Scardapane stepped in as showrunner and fresh scripts were written.
Charlie Cox has been refreshingly honest about the whole process and he also praised Marvel for agreeing to all of it. He believes it is that kind of creative flexibility that keeps the MCU fresh. Cox shared:
"My experience with Marvel has always been start to finish, that maybe more than any other studio I’ve worked with, they value the input of the actors as much as anyone. And even Kevin Feige has on numerous occasions called me and said, “What do you think? What’s working for you? What’s not?” Which is shocking to me because I always think, particularly with a company like Marvel, I always think they’ve got it all mapped out and they know exactly where it’s all going, what they want. And I think probably the reason they have such huge success is because they’re quite flexible and they do want to be guided as well as guide. So no, I never felt like they were going to let us fail completely or anything like that, but I didn’t imagine that they’d be willing to make such a huge u-turn. Obviously, that’s not cheap."
So with all of this going on and with darker themes and even deeper character arcs, Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 might really be some of the best writing the show has ever seen.
